Buying a scanner...

I am thinking about buying a scanner, but its been quite a while since I have actually been up to date on them. I was hoping that people could suggest what features I should look for, what is state of the art/acceptable specs, and any good/bad experiences they have with other scanners( particularly the Microtek 3750i).

Thanks

Have a price range?

I have an Epson 1240U and the thing is great. It can be had for under $150 now, probably cheaper than that even. Has great picture quality, text, and has recieved many good reviews. 🙂

I was thinking in the sub 100 dollar range...but if there was some great feature that a more expensive scanner had...then maybe

It totally depends on what you are going to do with the scanner. If you are just doing casual photo scanning, the sub-$100 models with 600x1200 dpi 42-bit color will do the job well

I personally would recommend the Canon 650U which is packed with the above features. It is also USB-powered so you don't have to deal with the AC adapter. You can get one for $70 at buy.com. Hope it helps.

Thanks for the suggestions...please keep them coming( especially any experiences with the Microtek...I am really leaning towards that because it is sub $50 and includes a transparency scanner and a negative scanner. Here is what I would like to be able to do with a scanner:

Scan pictures and what not...not necessarily at archival quality

Scanning text to a .txt or .doc file (OCR) Will a scanner that wasn't bundled with OCR software work with any commercially available packages? If so, who makes a good OCR, where can it be found, and for how much?

Scanning pages to be faxed over a fax/modem. (I think this is possible right? If not let me know because it is one of the primary reasons that I am getting this) If they made a scanner that had a one touch fax feature...that would be sweet
