i got an old billiards table out of a bar. wasn't full size, but a heck of a table. Heavy slate and in reasonable shape. Got it cheap as it needed some work on the finish and such but it was well worth it. VERY sturdy. has to be since there are drunk guys leaning on it and such. check around your local bar and see what you can find. might find a good solid table for reasonable $$$

If you are buying used, I would go to check it out with a nice long level. You don't really need to be concerned with an overall slant, just make sure that the slant does not vary across the table. Check the flat of the table and also check above the rail. Check the leg joints. If all of those are clear, then all you really have to do is re-felt and possibly refinish the wood, depending on condition.

Make sure you get 3/4 slate, not 1/2 It's more expensive but it feels soo much stronger and is less likely ot be damaged (especially on install.... read the terms, for me, if the installers dropped it, it came out of my pocket.). Other than that, spend the money (read >$100) on a good cue, you'll never regret it.

I think the table I looked at has 1" slate. Either way, I need it to be built in the basement. I don't have easy access to the basement.
