The company was Papa John's International- their headquarters. Rumor was Papa John didn't like somebody lower than him driving a nicer car, Papa likes his automobiles.

yeah im going to go ahead and call bullshit..unless you have proof that just seems to far out there. I am willing to bed that many who work for papa johns have nicer cars then that.

I could see how it might make your coworkers raise their eyebrows and wonder if maybe you've been getting the same paycuts as everyone else.

I've got one coworker with a ridiculously nice car. some people wonder how much more he's making than everyone else, though personally, I'm pretty sure he's still living in his parents' house.

my general thought is don't buy a better car than your boss. When you park next to him, he'll think he's paying you too much.

Generally it's good not to stand out too much, either by being below or above average.

My "Am I a moron" litmus test is "did you buy a car new?"
That works, too.
I am not worried about somehow losing my job over the car and not being able to pay for the car.. I am worried that the reality of the 'impression' of someone buying a new/nice car in a small business that isn't doing well. As the poll shows, not a great idea.
Uh, well I scanned your first post and just missed that part. I'm retarded, I won't try and excuse it away.

Personally I would buy it if I could afford it and I dont think "What people at work might think" would ever enter my head when I was making my decision. Even if I thought people at work would notice what kind of car I drive and be offended by it, besides the fact that it is none of their business, most of them know that cars are one of my hobbies and would probably think I sacrifice more of my income than they do for a nicer car.

This is not out of character for people and companies in general. Really. Never drive a better car than you boss has ... has been the advice.:(

I would lay low until things improve. And, you mean that you are not flogging you resume & getting it out there. People with options must stay on top of things. This does not mean that you must take a new job given the offer ... it is insurance tho and you might find a job in an industry that is more secure.

Alternatively, get a lesser expensive used car & one that has good resale to get you through. You need to take of number 1 (you) and a reward is a good thing. If you choose to stay with your current company AND the business improves, then you will have a better trade in.

Wasn't John the one who searched hi and low for his beloved 1980 Camaro? I see him driving it in the new PJ ad's, maybe he came to his senses and realized he's driving an old POS!..

Nope. If the company is doing poorly than the writing is on the wall that you are going to be looking for a job soon. Also, BMW/Mercedes stick out like sore thumb. Even if you buy a used BMW for 22k, people go apeshit over that yet people don't say a word when their is a 35k Dodge Ram. Its just perception.

Google John Tobe with QC Print.

At the time Schnatters best cars were a BMW 850 and a Viper. This was around 1996 if I remember correctly.

-edit-
Forgot to mention John is kinda short, so keep that in mind on the mentality.
