Buying a new (to me) car! (updated)

Well, I found a '99 Prelude SH at a small car lot with 79K on it, carfax says it was in 1 minor accident, but I didn't see any evidence of any structural damage. Otherwise it's a clean title. It has a few dings (3 that I counted), however the brakes had a pulse to them, I'll have to see what they can do for me. Otherwise it was in great shape, and I got the salesman down to $9100... I haven't put a deposit on it yet but I'm thinking of doing it within the next couple of days. Think I should chew him down more or do I have a hot enough deal on my hands? 😀

My friend bought a 1999 prelude type sh about 3 years ago for around 17K. It had only 30K miles or so, possibly less. It was the blue colored one.

It handles great, but is not a quick car by any stretch of the imagination. He had to put a new clutch in at around 50K miles, mostly because he was a beginner at driving standard. He put some new aftermarket shocks/coils on it (don't remember the name, if someone said it I would recognize it) and it rides very nicely.

It's a nice car and you will probably be happy with it. It holds its resale value fairly well and will last quite a while. It was definitely not a great car in the winter.
You also have to run premium gas, so be prepared for that.

Didn't you used to have the turbo dodge or was that somebody else on here? The Predude isn't much bang for the buck IMHO, especially taken into consideration the insurance rates. Since you're financing, you'll have to add collision/comp and since it's a highly stolen car (in my area it's way up there) the insurance might gouge you.

It's funny, my wife's 4 door accord costed more to insure on my policy than my MR-2 (and it's a turbo!). I payed $7500 for it with 99K and it is a blast, even stock it blew doors of any generation of Prelude. I suppose it might have a higher lifetime maintenance cost due do the forced induction and all, but I've owned a couple turbo toyotas and they've treated me well.

Did you check autotrader and all of that too? You'd probably get a better deal going private party, especially if you can wait a little bit.

They're reasonably quick (low-mid 15's stock) and great handlers. I think that last generation 'lude was rated by one car rag as the best handling FWD car ever or something (not saying I necessarily agree but hey).

Great engine that's good on economy as well.

BatmanNate, yeah I used to drive TD's, I love them still, but I need something newer. I'd love an MR2, but I can't find anything with decent milage on it, and call me crazy, but I think a 6 year old Honda motor will be a tad more reliable than a 13 year old Toyota turbo motor if they both have ~100K on them. I'd LOVE an MR2, but I just don't think it's feasible right now for reliability reasons

good friend had a 00 lude sh...that thing was one of the most fun cars to drive ever. don't know if it was the fastest or the best...didn't matter, it handled like it was on rails and always put a grin on your face driving. do yourself a favor geno and pop a few hundred for a short shifter on the thing...it makes it that much better(this coming from someone who believes honda has perfected the manual tranny/clutch/shifter feel/mechanism)

you just described the interior of all modern honda's. took a ride in a loaded 04 accord coupe... with leathers and the V6. the backseat's armrest was BLACK HALLOW HARD PLASTIC... i expected better.

damn, chill out dude! its a backseat armrest! i mean really...if you're gonna cut a few pennies, wouldn't taht be a good place to do it? how often does one sit in the back seat really if you're not a soccer mom, and in whichcase, she'd have to have her suv, but that's another story. fact of the matter is, that honda will last longer, cost less to start, provide most of the performance and hold its value better than the mb or bmw that comparing it to or expecting w/ something more than plastic

Sold them to pay for school 🙁 now I'm about ready to get out of school, so back to having a decent car 🙂

There could be a chance that's my old car. I used to have a 97 Prelude SH.

I really liked the car except for the one nagging problem it had. It had an issue with the digital key where the car would be fickle about recognizing it. The car would always not recognize it in the most inopportune times.

Why not get the SRT4 then? The spiritual sucessor to those Shelbys.

I dnd't read the entire thread, but did you consider a 240SX or a Lexus SC300/400?
