Buying a new mattress....

I've seen a solution to that for those who didn't want to pay for what they considered an overpriced air mattress. They each bought a xl twin bed that they liked, then he strapped them together and added a mattress topper. All of this contained inside one of those bed bug protector covers and he says they stay together pretty well. I would imagine a hassle to flip.

now that ain't a bad idea. i thought about the sleep number but they are so damn expensive.

Where can I find latex ones to try out? Been having trouble trying to track down some, but seems like the best option on the foam market.

Don't know for your area, they're common near me. Make it clear you want to try latex foam. Latex will feel closer to a spring mattress than foam will. I got an insanely soft mattress, but they had firmer ones too.

Make sure your store allows returns or something. Mine allowed either a return, or a exchange for a more expensive mattress. I dumped a memory foam mattress (NOT tempur pedic, they're awful) for my latex foam and could not be happier.

Also, I found the extra cover they want you to use the keep the warranty makes the mattress feel firmer.

Wife and I bought a Serta icomfort a couple of months back. I sleep pretty good on it, but the way I sleep, my shoulder is sore every morning.

I also can't decide how hot it is going to be. Some nights I freeze in it and have to pile on blankets, it won't even hold my body heat long enough to go pee, it's cold when I get back. On other nights I am on the verge of sweating, but if I take one blanket off, I'm back to cold as hell. 😕

I guess Summer will tell the tale.

Latex all the way...they can get expensive like $2-3k+, we got ours at Bob's discount furniture for under $900 for the mattress (~$500) and boxsprings ( we got the split queen boxsprings for ~$350). We figured we can replace the mattress 3 or 4 times (reuse the boxsprings) for the price of one expensive set. We got ours in 2006, and I can definitely see it's sagging a bit but kinda mold to our bodies, so we kinda like that, at least I do, not sure about my wife. I think ALL latex mattresses eventually will sag thou. It still retains some heat, but not as bad as foam. We will probably need to get a new one next year or so. I wouldn't buy any furnitures from Bob's, but I think their mattresses are ok.

Another vote for latex. Just make sure you aren't getting some hybrid. A lot of places sell "latex" mattresses, but when you actually look, it's just 3" of latex on top of a foam base. Same for "engineered" latex. Look for a 100% Talalay latex mattress. It'll be expensive, but buy once, cry once.

A solid latex mattress shouldn't break down (as long as it's not exposed to light) and no reason it shouldn't last decades. Consider it a twice in a lifetime purchase.

Wish I could figure out what the hell smells like gravy in here.

never tried the latex, but i think the best option out there is the beautyrest with those individual coils. i like coils because every other type of foam or air matress ive tried sags, and i cant stand sagging.

i used to hate tempurpedic because they trapped in heat and radiated it back at you. not so much anymore. they changed their design to keep that from happening. i have a tempurpedic, now, and i love it.

It still does, to a degree. Memory foam is heat activated.

Also, I was going to say "nice avatar" until I stared at your name for a second. Nice name and avatar. Time to add some music to my spotify queue 🙂

Rallispec,

I have done extensive research on our quest for the perfect bed at the right price and we came very close to Nirvana perfection. We paid a little more than I wanted but the King memory foam was manufactured locally about 30 miles away, free delivery, awesome 10 year (maybe 20 year) warranty and it's freaking awesome to sleep on. My only gripes are the price (close to $1,200 including delivery) and it sleeps a little warm but our climate is a little colder. We've had it for about 1.5 years and we still love it. If you like a firm bed and are buying memory foam, look for a higher density of 4.0+ or higher.

A few suggestions:

1) Seriously consider latex and memory foam instead of innerspring, DO NOT get sucked into the Sleep Number or Tempurpedic hype. Unless of course your house is filled with Bose and Monster equipment, in that case you're a lost cause.

2) If you have access to a local CostCo go there, their selection won't be that great but they should have at least 1-2 models available. Of course they have hands down the best return policy especially for non-electronics.

Keep in mind CostCo.com's inventory and pricing is different than CostCo B&M stores.

3) Here is an awesome web site filled with great reviews and helpful buyers advice:

4) Some Youtube.com reviews can be helpful:

Best of luck!

Thanks for all the great advice! I actually decided on a latex mattress, felt good, better for allergies, lasts a long time, and felt like a better compromise between the traditional mattresses and the memory foam. Can't wait for it to get here so I can try it out. I had never even heard of latex foam mattresses before yesterday.

mattress warranty is pretty much useless, my mattress comes with a 20yr warranty, but I am sure it comes with a lot of exclusions that they can pretty much find an excuse not to cover it.

I hope you actually went to a store and tried it out, not just did your research online then ordered one from a website?

Yeah, spent about 4 hours last night bouncing between mattress stores, having a small anxiety attack when I saw price tags, and finally settling on something I'll be happy with.
