Hey guys, I'm looking at a 2007 Mazda 3i Touring 5 spd with ABS/SAB/SAC, moonroof/6CD changer. Invoice according to them is $17062 and MSRP is $18075. Based on my research, it's $16233 and $18035, respectively. They're offering it to me for $17362, plus tax, title, tags.

I've used the tools at carbuyingtips.com, and even though their claimed invoice is considerably higher than my researched invoice, their offer is within about $100 of the negotiated price suggested by carbuyingtips, assuming a 5% dealer profit. What do you think? This is my first new car purchase and although I've done a lot of research I'd appreciate some experienced opinions.

Edit: Oops, I forgot a major element. The price they offered me, $17362, includes the destination charge of $595. My research invoice does not. So, I'm really looking at a comparison of the dealer's offer of $17362 to my calculated "good deal" offer of $17260, which is based on a 5% dealer profit.

Edit 10/2/06 5:36 pm EST: Nice, one of other dealers that I had originally contacted has made me an offer at $17,090. I'm still waiting to hear back from a third dealer, as well as the original to see if they can beat the new offer. Edmunds TMV for this car in my area is $17,817 (plus tax/title/tags), so the standing offer of $17,090 seems pretty attractive.

Edit 10/3/06 10:05 am EST: A third dealer has offered $17062. It's a negligible difference, but they're also quite a bit closer to my house.

Edit 10/3/06 7:05 pm EST: I went to the dealer this evening and after going back and forth for a while I got it at $16,963, $100 over invoice. It doesn't come in for a few weeks, but I'll be OTD for $17,860. It's not as spectacular as some folks on here suggested, but I'm happy with it. It seems to be pretty decent compared to what other people are getting on the various Mazda forums. Thanks for the help.

Edit 10/18/06 2:30 pm EST: I'm going to pick up the car in 3.5 hours. Very excited!

the Mazda 3 is heavily discounted in just about every newspaper advertisement i've seen. there are big rebates, etc. do you really think the dealer won't go any lower than $1100 profit? i sure don't. i'd offer $16500, tell them you know the invoice on the car, and that you know that gives them more than $250 profit on a car that you know isn't in hot demand.

WTF? I have a 99 Protege, and for city driving it has plenty of power. And the Mazda3 has much more power than the dinky 110hp I had.

I've had my 2005 Mazda 3s for about 16 months now, roughly 46k miles, and could not be happier.

BTW, shop around for dealers looking to make you a good deal. Took me 3 dealers to find one with a car/deal i liked but in the end i was happy.

Got mine loaded;

Black Mica Mazda 3s
Automatic
Navigation
Black Leather
Xenon Headlamps
Moonroof
6-cd In Dash
Sidecurtain Airbags
Side Sill Extensions
17" Wheels
some other stuff...

Sticker was over 24k, i was out the door at under 21 with tax.

My 04 Mazda3S was 16,800 before tax/title, granted the price has increased since then. If you have access to a Credit Union check and see if they offer a auto buying service, it may be worth checking out.

Not everyone is out to impress total strangers at stop lights with immature driving habits, nor do they pretend to require the capability to cruise @ 150 MPH. :p

Thanks for the replies. I have gotten quotes from all the dealers in my area and this place was the lowest. I'm not saying that I'll accept the offer as is, I'm just wondering how much room there is for negotiation. I did get approved for an auto loan through my credit union at 5.4%, their best rate. I'm happy with that, so now it's just down to negotiating the price.

150hp in a small affordable car w/ 5 speed manual is now very little?
Only thing I would check is if ZoomZoomLive is still giving away those $500 off coupons like last year. Otherwise, sounds like a descent deal

BTW, don't accept the offer right away. Do the internet thing. Submit this offer through edmunds or some other website, then have those dealers compete with each other.
Then go to lowest bidder and play hard to get to get even more discount. But definitely go through the internet department first.
BTW, there may be a short term shortage of Mazda3's due to losses on Cougar Ace ship.

Cool, I guess Mazda is doing better. It was $500 last year when I bought mine :)
Still worth it. It's pretty fun.

Thanks, I actually narrowed it down to this dealer based on competing internet quotes. I hadn't heard about the Cougar Ace either. I guess that explains the lack of 3's on the lots.

The FordPartner program prices are the following:

2007 Mazda 3 4-Door - This is a 4-Door, correct?
i Touring MT ($15,128 / $16,155) (S-Plan Price / Suggested Retail Price)
ABS/SAB/SAC Package ($340 / $395)
Moonroof & 6-CD Package ($765 / $890)

This provides the following prices: ($16,233 / $17,440)
It seems you already have this information but cannot obtain the pricing without negotiation.

Have any of the following accessories been missed?
Cargo Mat (32 / 40)
Cargo Net (32 / 40)
Door Edge Guards (90 / 100)
Fuel-Filler Door, Pearl Satin (90 / 100)
Floor Mats, All Weather (48 / 60)
Fog Lights (240 / 300)
Mud Guards, Front & Rear (96 / 120)
Moonroof Deflector (40 / 50)
Compass & Auto Dim Mirror (140 / 175)
Compass & Auto Dim Mirror w/Homelink (200 / 250)
Remote Engine Start (290 / 350)
Rear Lip Spoiler (260 / 325)
Rear Wing Spoiler (300 / 375)
SIRIUS Satellite Radio with 6-month subscrip (344 / 430)
Wheel Locks (32 / 40)

On September 11, 2006, Mazda USA announced that none of the Mazda cars aboard will be sold as new vehicles. [11] Mazda USA will also publish a list of VINs for the affected vehicles on the www.MazdaUSA.com website.

The car also has the $32 wheel locks. Otherwise, that matches the info that I have exactly. What I'm saying is that the "invoice price" that the dealer quoted me is a bit higher than what I've calculated, but that the final offered price is only $100 off of what I calculated would be a reasonable offer. For example, they include a "Baltimore Assessment" fee of $202.00, which I think is a B.S. charge, but in the end their net figure is not too far off of mine.

um.. no 3i's were on board.. only 3s and other mazda models

btw OP- why r u giving 5% profit for the dealer?! in the DC area, i got my 3i at invoice.

dealer already has a 2% holdback from mazda, plus they get end of month + volume bonuses.

Invoice should be the MAXIMUM you should pay

edit:
document fee/processing fee/Baltimore Assessment fee.. ALL the same, and all BS charges. so negitiate $202 below invoice!

wait.. in MD, i think the law says the procesing fee can't be more than $99?!

Yeah, Destination fee is just BS. My local dealership tried that on my Toyota, I told them I'd just go get one from another dealership. That fee disappeared quickly.

Hmm... I always thought that destination fee was the one legitimate additional fee.

You can do MUCH better than that. If MSRP is 18k and they are offering 17.3k, then there is LOTS of wiggle room in there still. I would definitely not take it for that price. Don't calculate in a 5% dealer profit. That is like giving them a 5% tip. They get all sorts of extra incentives and such that make them money.

Does it really cost them $600 per car to get to the dealership? NO.
