Both will be 120 gig, 8mb buffer hard drives.

Which one should i pick up?

I know the price sucks, but i am in canada and i have a 100 credit there.

Seagate

Western Digital

I will be using this computer for gaming and not a whole lot else. I am sure i will find other stuff to do with it tho 🙂 .

Seagates have 5 year warrentees and WD's have 3 year warrentee's.

I have had 2 WD's die on me in a week but i have read about a lot of horror stories on anandtech about seagates too.

Thanks for your opinion!

I'd go with the Seagate based on warranty alone... otherwise the drives aren't too much different.
I have an 8meg cache WD as well and it runs just as good as my 7200.7, but I just love Seagate drives.. I think most people will steer you towards Seagate.

ya, my friend would build a case out of seagates if he could he loves them so much. I was just looking for an unbiased opinion. I didn't really think they made a huge differance.

Looking more for what the rma policies are on them. I don't want to send it away and get a refurbished back 🙁

Seagate is a better buy for the warranty alone, and it will be much quieter. Any speed difference should be negligible...

I've had only WD drives since I got my first computer over five years ago. Of the seven I own only one died on me. That drive lasted me about 4 years. The drive gave me enough warning so that I was able to backup all my data before it died. Good luck.

Oh ya, and with 7 case fans the HD noise won't be noticable. The 5 year warrentee is looking pretty good after i am thinking how long 5 years is 🙂

western digital is going down the drain. they lost a lot of money last year, and people have been having a lot of problems wtih them (so i've heard). i have a maxtor, wd, and seagate at home and all of them work fine, but i find my seagate to be quieter. seagate does have the faster seek time, quieter performance, and a much better warranty.

all in all, seagate is perhaps the top hard drive maker out right now. i wouldnt put wd in the top 3 anymore. its only because of their raptors why i think their still keeping competitive because seagate outperforms them in 7200rpm in about every single way, but tahts jsut me.

You heard wrong. WD made plenty of money this past year, especially when you consider they are an ATA only manufacturer with no SCSI division to pull in higher profit margins.

seagate outperforms them in 7200rpm in about every single way

Every single way if you exclude every benchmark you can look up:

Western Digital Caviar WD2500JB vs. Seagate Barracuda 7200.7

Looks like complete sweep of every performance benchmark by WD. The Seagate was a few dB quieter, though the WD model tested didn't have FB which the newer PB line does, and the Seagate was .4 degrees C cooler. Not exactly an advantage I would base a purchase on.

Thanks for the benchmarks!

The WD is a 250gig vs. Seagate 160 gig

you would think this would slow down the search rates even more of the WD, but it still wins.

I think i have made up my mind on the Seagate due to the awsome warrentee.

Seagate is also a good choice, NCIX has some good prices.

At this level i guess price is the only variable to consider (apart from warranty) 🙂

Seagate, all the way. Beautiful piece of hardware.

no kidding. i just got in on the seagate 160gig for 50AR at frys and this thing is nice, has a mirror like finish on the top. i know looks dont matter too much for hard drives, but when i opened the box up i was very impressed.

i had a maxtor in here before and the noise was annoying me so i went back to seagate knowing how silent these things are...no regrets, i should have switched a long time ago. seagate gets my vote!

I'd go with Seagate for several reasons.Quietest drives I've used.Performance, warranty and they are a tried over time proven quality brand.

Western Digital all the way. Although the last experience I had with a Seagate HDD was a 420mb model.

In this house, theres 4 WD SE's.... some 2 years old and still as fast as day 1. My 80Gb came with 4 years warranty when I got it 🙂

Dude, do yourself a favor and never buy computer hardware at Future Shop again. There's gotta be a small computer shop near where you live.

I would have to say go with Seagate man, they are awesome drives, every modern WD I have had has failed in one way or another, out of 5, and they are tough to get replaced, I have been running Seagate for several years and they are very reliable drives, also the quietest 7200 rpm drives available.
