Buying a gun: AR-15 or AK47?

Well maybe your unit was filled with boys who had a love afair with the AR. I'm not sure... I do know that if you watch the news enough, you can see footage of our boys over there carrying rifles that certainly are not the AR15.

I also know a few National Guard friends that have come back and admitted to picking up an AK and keeping their AR on their back.

Mute point really, as in it does happen. Hey, even special forces guys don't always go with an M4. I've heard of FALs, M14s, G3s, G36s, AK 47s and 74s, etc being used.



All I'm trying to point out, is the AR is a perfect fit for the weekend shooter who wants to feel "badass". It does take a lot of cleaning, and it is a pain to clean. I own a Bushmaster, and I owned a DSArms version of the AR15.

Do I like the gun? Sure. I'd never depend on it though.

My heavily modified SKS has had literaly tens of thousands of rounds through it with less than 20 jams. All the jams were due to Cabela's cheap clips. You put the stock fixed mag in and it doesn't matter if it has been a year since it has been oiled, it is going to fire every single shot.

To me, that is what is the most important about a rifle.

That it shoots, every single time.



Now if you don't like the AK or SKS. Look into an FAL. Incredibly reliable and the DSArms versions make the M14 look not so hot anymore.



Plus you are firing a bullet that actually has some knock down power.

Eugene Stoger takes a lot of flack for the AR-15/M16 (descendants of his original AR-10 design) but is rarely recognized for his work on the AR-16 which would be developed into the AR-18. The AR-18 operating mechanism was incorporated by HK into the rather successful G36 (and XM8 ironically), the Beretta AR-70, the disasterous bullpup Enfield weapon system, and others.
 
I won't disagree, the AR is not a very good weapon. I do agree with your assessment of the SKS. I picked one up last year that as far as I can tell was packed for about 20 years (whatever that preserving oil they use is). It has yet to jam after a few hundred rounds.

Also, it is quite possible that SOME soldiers are using AKs, but it can't be more than a tiny fraction.
 
Oh no, never wanted anyone to think all the solidiers were... I'd guess it to be less than 1 out of a 100 even thinks about it.



Yes, the great SKS... Packed in that heavy grease which is so hard to get out of everywhere... Try cleaning the gun in carb cleaner and then hit it with some of this http://militec-1.com/ which is by far the best gun oil I've ever found.

Also, tapco has a recoil buffer that I have found reduces a lot of the clang from the bolt and carrier slamming against the back of the gun.

I'll see if I can get pictures of my SKS sometime... No one recognizes it as an SKS anymore.

Bah, the recoil on that is nothing. I can fire about 15 rounds through my Steven's Model 200 before my shoulder is bruised and aching. Oh, and I LOVE how the grease was packed *into* the cleaning kit. That was loads of fun to clean.
 
Well the felt recoil on the SKS even a little kid can handle just fine. I just got the buffer to maybe save some wear on the gun and in return found out that it eliminates noise as well.

So is your Stevens in 30-06?

Try a 5 shot group with .338 Ultra Mags... 😉


That will give ya the jumps a little bit... I had to work for awhile to quit flinching when I would fire after that gun.
 
After being in weapons manufacturing and testing both weapons, The AK 47 is ten folds more reliable than the AR 15. However, the AR 15 is more acurate and easier to handle. The smaller caliber enables a tighter fire picture on semi auto burst. However, when dinking around and wanting to fire as many rounds as possible its nice to know you can blow up everything up without a jam when using the AK
 
Quick question. Is it illegal to keep a handgun in the trunk of your car when it is locked up and enclosed inside a hand gun case? I would like to keep one in the car just in the event of an emergency.
