Buying a gun: AR-15 or AK47?

AR15.

The AR costs more upfront, both have roughly the same cost to feed (Ammo), mags are cheap for both.
The AR is more accurate and has far more add ons for it and I prefer last round bolt hold open.

I wouldnt feel undergunned with either though. If your on a budget, AK. If price "is no issue" AR hands down.

One of the differences b/w Russian made AK and AKs made in other countries is the quality of the metal parts (barrel and such).
Russian made AKs have the best metal quality. There are some other differences, but can't remember them atm from the top of my head.

What do you like the look of more?
Personally, I like the AR. As I said before, WAY more options. In terms of options, AK's are like Linkin Logs. You can build a cabin with one window or two. AR's are like Legos. You can build anything your little devious mind can come up with.

Built my own AR15, love it. Dont buy one assembled, select some chjoice parts and get a gunsmith to do it for your. Much cheaper to do.

Jesus man you dont need a gunsmith to build an AR!

well to use...not to actually hit anything they aim for right?😉

Only a suggestion if OP does not know how to go about building one. 🙂. Of course you don't need a gunsmith.

Fair nuff. In which case he needs to shoot me a PM.
Building an AR is really easy. If you can put together a PC you can put together and upper.
If you can mod a case and you put together a lower. And I onyl say that as you *might* have to do a bit of grinding to get your trigger adjusted where you want it.

Are you serious? You can buy parts and assemble a fully functional AR-15? Hummm.

AK if you want a cheaper gun. AR if you want to spend some money. Personally I'd LOVE an AR, but would probably buy an AK first just b/c it is cheaper. And if I'm just going to tool around and not hunt with it then I couldn't justify spending the money. But as already mentioned, if money is no factor then the AR is the way to go....it's also much cooler and has some awesome mods for it.

edit: oh, and not to hijak, but what about a SKS? Anyone know the main difference between and AK47 and an SKS?

Yep. Its easy to do. The only part that must go through an FFL is the lower receiver. And if you get an 80% receiver you dony even need to register that.
Going with 80%'s though is NOT recommended for beginners. You end up having to drill all the holes (This is an option for AK's as well) and if your off by even a little bit things dont work right, or at all.

Otherwise yes its easy. I built my own precision upper. I chose to build my own because I could specify every peice. I got *exactly* what I wanted.
And it cost me, but the little bitch'll shoot with the *best* of them.

SKS vs AK from a functional standpoint of shooters standpoint?
From a shooters standpoint, they are virtually identical. AK takes mags, SKS has internal fixed mag and uses stripper clips.
I prefer the last round bolt hold open on the SKS, the AK doesnt have that.

Not a damn thing wrong with an SKS.

Its not to bad, attaching the barrel to the upper receiver is the hardest part, but you can buy that already assembled and snap the few pieces together. If I was going to spend $800 on an AK or AR I would get the AR. This is my frankenrifle I put together from old bushmaster and olympic parts for about $700. I've put around 1k rounds of dirty russian ammo through it at a time without a misfeed. But like I said shoot both see what you like more.

Hardest as in most force. I thought the barrel was the easiest. Hand tighten, then go to the next hole. Doesnt matter what it takes. you pull on the wrench till the next gas hole is lined up.

The trigger was a bit tricky on mine cause I had to grind off .025 on the top and a smudge off the sides too.
