Buying a domain name...

Is there a way to tell for sure if a domain has been registered without using a registration site? I don't trust them because they could have a thrid-party squat on the domain I searched for, then name a price. Does the "page not found" error mean that it definitely has not been registered?

These registration sites are somehow paying ICANN. I'd like to purchase my domain with the least possible middle-men. What service do you recommend?

You are being paranoid. Go to GoDaddy.com and check the names. All the good stuff is already taken anyway. No one is trying to outflank registrations. It would require too much cost.

85% of all domains aren't used you know. If you think it's hot you can almost guarantee it's taken.

A single part-timer could read domains entered into their query system. If it looks like something they can sell, you can bet that many shady registration companies would snatch it up and feature it on their damn spam lists until they find a buyer. It's a lot easier than paying someone to think up domain names! Also, the names from search queries are already ~90% guaranteed that someone is already looking for it, so they would have more sales as a result of registering these domains instead of their own spontaneous registrations.

Think about it. How would you run a cyber-squatting company? [rhetorical question]

I'm curious, how much do they pay and who are they paying? [please answer :)]

You're insane and don't even know it. Go to netsol.com, look it up. They process thousands of queries every day, and they own the registry itself on ICANN's behalf. If you think they've got some squatting organization processing bullsh!t all day you're retarded. They own the list and could snatch it instead of releasing it if they pleased, it's not like it's hard to cross reference a domain to a frickin' dictionary.

Agreed. If you're interested in "purchasing your domain with the least possible middle-men," then register it through NetSolutions. I only use them although, at that time I first registered (almost 8 years ago), they didn't have other sites that offered to register for you. NetSolutions is professional and reliable and not a here today-gone tomorrow site. Also, they will advise you when it's time for you to re-register, both by email and snail mail - a nice feature since it's very easy to forget when your registration is about to lapse. The only "problem" I've had is not with NetSolutions but with the occasional phone call and/or email from people asking me if I want to sell my domain name.

I find domains that are reserved by "BuyDomains.com" all the time. Apparently, they are a registration and squatting company with outrageous prices. You would think that they would at least pretend to be two seperate companies :)
