Buying a car...

Argo

Lifer
What new car would you suggest to anyone who is just out of college. Yeah, and one more thing, I don't want to spend more than $13,000.

Well, here are the choices:

Chevrolet Cavalier
Dodge Neon
Ford ZX2
Ford Focus

you can add to the group if you want to.

Jeez Ornery, you're never gonna let Windogg live that one down huh? 😛 I bet that beast would cripple your Lincoln head on in a collision so you'd better watch out! 😉

Argo, have you thought about going used? You can get something very nice that's only a couple years old. Try looking for an Accord V6 if you're looking for something more tame.

That car made me laugh till I wet my pants even before I put that cute little girl in it. Got quite a bit of mileage out of it, I must say 😛

Why are you not thinking Japanesse? If you want something responsible with reasonable insurance rates you don't want a slightly used V8 mustang or a 300zx, but a civic is going to last you a long time...or an old accord as was just mentioned. Remember...when you buy a new car you're paying for that new car smell; get a 1-2 year old car it shaves off a whack of money and still leaves you sitting pretty in the warranty zone. If you want the absolute best value for dollar get a very slighly used foreign fairly small vehicle and it will last you forever. Live responsibly now and your next car can be a corvette 🙂

You can get a C3 Corvette... (Like mine) for around $5000 - $10000. I wouldn't sell mine for less than $19000 due to the mods I have put into it and the paint.

Get a used Nissan Maxima. Do NOT buy a Ford, Neons are g@y, Cheveys ARE cool though...

Buy a used Porshe 944. You can get nice ones for $10,000 and they are VERY nice.

I think he is looking for a car (I guess...) that isn't going to cost him $3k/year on repairs - am I right? 🙂 Thats why I mentioned the slightly used japanesse ones and told him to hold off for the vette!

you don't want to buy a chevy. who would buy that crap? except for the corvette, and the pickup trucks, they are garbage. you have to go either german or japanese if you want a quality car.

he lists compact cars and you guys are suggesting sports cars...

i think you may be able to get a brand new civic for a little more than 13K, sure, it won't have any options, but you're not gonna get many anyway going new. and there is the toyota echo, which, along with siblings celica, mr2 and that electric one, have made toyota the overall ugliest styling in the business.

I got my 1999 Honda Civic Hatchback DX for about that. With air and TTL, it came to about 15,500. Honda is the best car I have ever driven. I have owned 43 different ones!!

Having ridden in the all of your choices other than the Focus, I have to say that the ZX2 would be my favorite of the bunch. Don't buy the Neon, it's a piece of junk IMHO. I don't like the the Neon because I've always thought they seemed cheaply made. The cavalier is OK, but I like the ZX2 better, and everything I've seen about the Focus indicates that I think it ought to be even nicer than the ZX2. Test drive each one and see what you like best. May I suggest that you also consider the Daewoo Lanos? They base price at $9,130 new, and with A/C and a decent radio you can still come in under $10,000.

EDIT: Of course if you intend to drive the car until it blows up, find a used Honda. Hondas are generally good for a minimum 200,000 miles.

If you want A/C and any other creature comforts in that price range may I suggest the Kia RIO. It has a long warranty and starts @ $8,895. Mind you, this is BASIC transportation.

vi_edit stated: "I'd say go for a '98 VW Jetta. It will still have 3yr/50,000 mile warranty on it."

I don't get it. VW offers 2 yr/24,000 mi bumper to bumper warranties on their new cars, and their powertrain warranties are 10 yr/100,000 mi. Certified pre-owned VWs are covered by a new 2 yr/24,000 mi warranty.

All I can say about the Focus is drive in a focus, then in a nice car like a VW - and if you can't tell why the VW is more expensive (hence get a slightly used one), then there is no hope for ya!

Well, my initial goal was Audi A4, but my dad talked me out of it, saying that I shouldn't spend more than 15k on my first car. Needless to say, I don't want to spend a lot on repairs, otherwise, I'd just go for more expensive cars. My heart does lie with German cars, but those seem to be too expensive for now. I'm not too much of a compact cars fan, but that seems to be my only option. Nevertheless, I do want to get all the options, like A/C, 15" wheels, nice stereo, keyless entry, etc...

Well then get a honda civic for the love of God! Its better than a cavalier. My neighbor has a '95 cavalier and the wheel rims are starting to rust 😛
