Buying a car...

I know, I know I already did one thread on this earlier but now I have narrowed my choices down or rather increased them .

I decided that I want to buy either
1) Honda CRX '90 - '91(Modded)
2) Honda Prelude '91 - '94 (depends on what I can afford)
3) Acura Integra '91 - '94
4) Nissan 240SX

I have about $6,000 to spend and I don't really need room for other people since its just going to be for me. My parents have their own cars and what not. What car do you guys think I should get?

The 240SX is nice as well, but they're not as fun as a CRX

In that year range, I'd say the Prelude or the Integra. The CRX is too econo-boxy for me. You are aware that 94 is the first year of the current gen Integras, right? They won't be anywhere NEAR the cost of the Hondas.

They're real easy to mod, and can smoke all of the cars you picked in stock form

I'd get an Eclipse GSX before I'd get it's Eagle twin, but either way they're damned fast cars for the money.

Oh yeah for the mods on the CRX I would probably get a CRX with the engine swapped out it would have a Vtech (B16a) engine in it.

shabby, from what I hear they're relatively unreliable. Especially in the electrical department. I was considering one, but I opted for something more basic/reliable.

Get the CRX-Si, they will drive rings around a Prelude even if they lose in a straight line acceleration contest. The Prelude is a nice 2nd choice, just not as nimble as a CRX-Si. I'd take a Prelude over an Integra because of their respective positions in their brands. The Integra is Acura's "red-headed step child" if you will, Acura wants you to buy a CL Type S, not and Integra. The Prelude, however, has always been Honda's technological showcase, first implementation (by Honda) of ABS (1988, Honda's "ALB" system), first (by Honda) 4-wheel steering in the early '80s, VTEC showcase, ATTS in the new ones. The Prelude is better loved by the manufacturer than the Integra (plus the '91 series look so nice with those retractable headlamps). I dislike Nissans because all the controls seem to have a slightly numb feeling to them (excluding the steering and throttle/brake/clutch), the radio buttons on my mother's Maxima have no positive feel, neither does the turn signal, wiper switch, or the climate control adjustments. That's just a matter of preferance though.

1989-1993 Nissan 240SX SE. Damned nice and reasonably refined for a sports coupe of it's age. It's got Nissan reliability, and parts for it are in good supply. It's RWD and that's what would be the selling piont for me. It's a sweet handler, having driven one. Me likey. It's cockpit looks way better than cars from the same generation. The only car I would consider for $6000 is an '90 Ecipse GSX.

WAIT WAIT! Corrado G60!! You can get one for $3800, and use the remaining money to get yourself a BahnBrenner Lysholm Supercharger. I hear that it puts out just as much, or more power than the VR6 equipped Corrado. Damn fast car! Put on a Quaife, and you're ready to rock! VR6's can do the 1/4 mile in 15 seconds, just imagine what a 200HP+, 2,600lb Lysholm charged car can do.

Say good bye to economy, say hello to friday night at the dragstrip!

What? Why no american cars? You loose so many cool possibilities that way! THIS would be a really sweet cars that would spank all those you mentioned (and be 2.5k cheaper in the states eheh).

BTW:the DSM cars like the Eagle Talon, Mitsubishi Eclipse, and the Plymouth Laser are NOT considered to be domestics I dont think since they are all a mitsubishi product.....

Ooohh, Soybomb has a point - that R/T's packing 224HP

A lot of people don't realize that America (particularly Dodge) had some fast cars back in the 80's / early 90's. That R/T runs the quarter in the mid 14's stock, and my '89 CSX does so in just under 15. You might not think this is anything special, but it is when you can find these cars for under $7/6k, hell, I got mine for $5500!

I'd go with a '91 CRX Si. Instead of the B16A engine, I'd opt for an LS block with a Type-R head if I could get it.

Nutcase99: Its not an american car, its made by mitsubishi. It was labeled under three different names for some reason, Eagle Talon, Plymouth Laser and a Mitsubishi Eclipse, they're all the same.
The 2000 eclipse cant smoke anything cuz mitsu took out the turbo and awd and stuffed a fwd v6 in there.
Unless that crx has a turbo in it, the talon/eclipse/laser will smoke it.
The talon runs a 15 sec 1/4 mile while a civic si runs 15.7.
It can run mid 13's with a downpipe, exhaust, boost controller, maf mod, and some other free mods. And even high 11's/low 12's if you buy a 16G turbo, fuel pump/injectors and a fmic.
Imo there is no way to increase the power of a b16a tremendously without a turbo/supercharger. Intake/exhaust/headers will increase it by a bit, but come on, civic si owners can barely run 15's flat with those mods.
Increasing the power of an n/a engine is a lot hard than a turbo'ed engine, anyone can tell you that.

As for electrical problems, yes it has one nasty one. The caps on the ecu will start to leak and basically you have to buy a new one($1000 bucks). But the caps can be easily replaced if you know how to solder.

Check out www.dsm.org for more info on the talon/eclipe, trust me when you'll get hooked on boost, theres no going back

EDIT - That lotus engine in the daytona is too sweet, lotus designed turbo engines can supports gobs of power on stock internals. The guy from Hahn Racecraft said himself that a neon engine with lotus heads/pistons/rods has more potential than a dsm, hard to believe but its true.

Nutcase99: Im sure the crx you listed is really nice, i mean it has the full conversion, hood, bumper, the works. But it still only outputs 149 hp to the wheels, which is around 180 hp at the crank, the talon has 195hp at the crank and more to spare due to its turbo.
With the crx's light body, its power to weight ratio is pretty good, and im guessing you can probably run low 15's or high 14's with it. But thats if you know how to launch and shift, i still see si(r) owners running 16's mainly cuz they cant drive.

I suggest you test drive an awd talon, drop the clutch at 4500rpm and let hell break loose. The launch of an awd talon is just amazing, instant whip-lash i tell You just cant get that with the fwd 110 lbs/ft of torque in the crx.

In the end it comes down to what you want, a really fast car or a really nice looking yet descently fast car.
Im a speed freak myself so i'd go with the talon, although i know that the crx will turn more heads, but the talon will definely show you its tail lights more often


TuffGuy: The 2000 eclipse in stock form is downgrade imo from the earlier dsm's power, but hey since its modded im sure it can compete with them

Go for the 240SX. I drive my dad's 1995 after he got his 1996'ish RX-7(too bad he wont let me touch it). The insurance is surprising low but the has nice power for a four-banger. You could probaly pick up a nice early 1990's for 6k.

TuffGuy: How much did your car cost? And you might be able to smoke my CRX.. I'm not sure I just know that my friends CRX in Fl can smoke almost any car he tries to race.

If that crx runs low 14's with only 150 hp to the wheels it must wight in at around ~2200 pounds with driver and fuel.
How much does the stock crx wight, is it stripped by any chance?
