I'm anticipating on buying a car in the next 2 to 3 weeks and i"m wondering, if I can still buy a car if I don't have insurance.

I'm still searching, so I won't know if I will buy through a dealer or a private party...however, the last time I bought a car from the dealer, my salesman almost went nuts when I told him I forgot to bring my proof of insurance. He said he won't let me take the car. In the end, I had to call my agent for them to fax over my proof of insurance.

This time, I don't have car insurance since I don't have a car.

So how will this work? If I don't have insurance, what do I need to do? do I ask my insurance company to give me insurance, even before I buy a car

You need insurance. There is no point even discussing the details.

Shop around for best insurance rates (Geico, Allstate, Progressive, Famrers or through local insurance broker)
You get the vin number of the car you are buying and provide that to the insurance company of choice. They will provide you cards that or in some case you can print them off the website.

Talk to an insurance agent ahead of time. Call them to start your policy at the time you purchase the vehicle. They can then fax your brand new insurance card to the dealer.

Private party should not require proof of insurance.
However, you will need it to register the vehicle.
Any financing will require the insurance before the vehicle is turned over to you.

You might be able to get the vehicle off a dealer lot, if paying cash or certified check, without insurance; depends on the rules of the state

Never, EVER been asked for proof of insurance to test drive a vehicle. Every dealership is required by law to have insurance covering accidents during test drives. If you get into an accident while test driving a vehicle, it's sure as shit not being reported to your insurance company under any circumstance.

This isn't about a test drive.

the only way I could think of to buy a car without insurance without breaking the law would be showing up to the dealership with an insured tow truck.

Err you can get insurance online in like 10 mins

This, I don't get why it's an issue. Find the car you like, grab your phone and buy an insurance policy from the dealer's parking lot. Heck, I'd be surprised the dealer doesn't have a broker they send insurance referrals to so they can get a kickback.

Well yes, but that's because you need insurance to register a car, not to buy it. I'm sure plenty of track-ready Porsches are bought exactly how you describe it. You pick up the car and put it on a trailer, since you're not registering it.
