I've no idea what they go for used, but they probably do not hold their value as well as a subaru. It might be a cheaper option for essentially the same car.

The 9-2X is a lot more expensive than a WRX - IIRC, a good 50% more.

....so you could buy a WRX with leather seats for way, way more than the priced of a good, used STi?

PASS!

Umm, the 9-3 has absolutely nothing in common with a WRX. What (I hope) you are thinking of is the 9-2x.

I had just about the same requirements, wagon, awd, fun, somewhat to pretty reliable. I too looked at the V70R, but go read the forums... HORRIBLE reliability, and I mean bad. You think Audi and BMW will be expensive to maintain, that car is awful. Good in theory, bad in practice. So like others said, best economic sense will be a Subaru (and turbo for fun). The WRX are pretty tiny though, I would get a legacy or forester if you actually want the wagon for room. If you want something a little less reliable, and more comfortable (with FRAMED windows) I would look to Audi (over BMW due to the better AWD system). A4 is okay, but if you want fun you can find an older S4 turbo in the 10-20k range but I would prefer the V8 for reliability and cost to own I think. Not sure if it is true, but I would assume two turbos + Audi = $$$$, and the V8 would be a little less in the overall ownership cost. A6 is a little bigger again, the rear seats in the A4 are small for adults (6' range). Other than that, there is not too much that is interesting. I would love to see a fusion wagon with the ecoboost motor, or CTS wagon, but American car companies drop the ball with wagons.

And if you ask what I ended up with... a 2003 2 door Civic paid in cash. It kind of sucks, but is super reliable and paid off. Oh, and the girly bought a 2006 A6 wagon so I can ride in that!

When I looked at new cars, the MSRP was at least 50% more. The quoted drive-out prices weren't nearly that far apart though. I did a quick search on Autotrader, and only have 1 2005 9-2X available near Houston. The 9-2X falls in line (actually a bit cheaper) then comparable Impreza WRX's from the same year.

9-2x is an impreza WRX but it has the nicer Saab interior and an upgraded suspension similar to the STI, but again very difficult to find because they didn't make that many.

Why wagon? Wagons are only badass when they're 54 feet long and have big blocks under the hood.

And I mean REAL big blocks, not those pansy "3.8l big blocks".

I like wagons for a few reasons.. few others like them and there aren't really many on the road which is something I like. They have all the room of an SUV but still drive and ride like a car, and at least in the Volvo's I liked the large open rear windows/tailgate. No blind spots at all.

EDIT: Fail for subaru, they lost me as a repeat customer.

I think you might be wrong. I have been looking for a Subaru legacy GT with a stick and have found a few 2006 and 2008's. Even edmunds claims you can get them till 2009 with a stick. However the manual wagons did stop in 2005.

Since the OP specified that he wanted a wagon, i figured it was obvious I was talking about wagons. 2005 was only year for legacy gt wagon with a manual. 2006 and 2007 you could still get a legacy gt wagon with an auto.

EDIT: Join us over at legacygt.com and hit up the forums to read about the car.
