we're talking baseline altima I4 175 hp i guess that is not bad but it probably has no A/C or radio of any kind if it is a regluar 2.5 not the 2.5S

IMO it is hideous in the rear though

The main problems with the Jettas have been their Windows popping. This has been fixed on the newer year models. The other has been the coil packs....which was just for a year or two from a manufacturer that produced faulty ones. VW > Mazda
Mazdas have more problems with paint life on the car and door seals and such wearing quickly.

Here is a consumer review of this years model Jetta BTW..... http://autos.msn.com/userreviews/reviewlist.aspx?idmodel=10479&search=MostRecent&num=50&trim=All〈=All
And a consumer review list of this years 6.....
http://autos.msn.com/userreviews/reviewlist.aspx?idmodel=10684&search=MostRecent&num=50&trim=All〈=All

Edit:....good lord, look at all the horrible reviews of the 6!!!??? WTF? Im thinking you may want to pass on the 6 now...Maybe look at getting Nissan? Of course your best bet is to drive both and to totally go over both of them and check out how they seal things and the quality of the materials inside and out. Also IB most of those reviews are fake, someone must have gotten burned on one and got rather angry.

VW has the worst customer service when you have something go wrong with your car. Can't speak for Mazda since I never had one. The Jetta has also fallen to the bottom of the charts when it comes to problems during the first year of ownership.

It amazes me how many people are recommending a Ford product.

I'm sorry, but I've owned three post Ford Mazdas (two 626s and one MX-6 LS), (one was my GF's the other two were bought within a year by my ex-wife and me. ALL THREE have had major problems and were rattle traps within the first two years.

People are so wowed with the 6 they are completely willing to forget about Mazda's crappy reliability.

I'd get a Jetta over a Mazda. Hell, I'd get a Hyundai over a Mazda anyday.

If a car has a 4-cylinder engine, 99.99% of the time it will be an inline 4, not a V4. I say 99.99% of the time on the off chance that some oddball manufacturer that I've never heard of actually made a V4 and put it in a car.

I4 (INLINE 4 cylinder), NOT V4.

with that said, i haven't heard much horror stories from mazda owners but i don't know that many of them. my aunt drives a pretty old mazda and the car works fine though. if you were to choose between those 2 i'd pick the 6.

of course, as a nissan fanboy i'd buy an altima instead :)

A "pretty old" Mazda is probably not a post Ford Mazda.

yeah I i realized my mistake instead that is why i said 4 cylinder instead of v4 in the last quote

I drove the Mazda 6 @ the mazdarevitup event also. The stock car handled nice and had good pickup but the interior was kinda cheap. However the exterior of the 6 vs. the Jetta makes up for it in my mind.

Recent? Replace "some recent" with "a two decade long proven history of," and you're right. (Solid drivetrains though, so they can last a long time if you take care of everything else that breaks.)

wow!!
well, jaguar and volvo are also owned by ford! Don't know if the quality has decreased but the price hasn't gone down on those!
thanks for the input though!!! At this point i think if there was public transportation here, i would take that instead!

I would venture to say that the quality of Jag has suffered somewhat from Ford ownership, not sure about Volvo but I do know that they don't seem to carry the same aura they once did....personally I agree with Amused, I wouldn't touch a Mazda as I have seen some pretty unreliable 626's, MX6's and a few others..the only decent cars they had were the Miata and the Rx7 but I have even seen those have some serious and expensive problems come up...I would suggest that new Dodge SRT4 or as someone else said a VR6 Jetta before I looked at the 6.

Jag's quality sucked from the get-go. All british cars have histories of crappy reliability... worse than US cars.

Hey Amused, I should have said status instead of quality...I know their quality and their service was very bad pre ford, but since the Ford buyout they have made some moves to cheapen the brand, if anything it could be argued that the current lower end Jags are far more reliable than those of old, but their image isn't what it used to be and I feel it never will be....the X type is the perfect example of them exploiting the brand...personally I sort of like the X and S types but I can see how some would think less of them, much like many are not impressed with Saab being a GM product...there is something more "romantic" about a company being its own company much like BMW, or the Jag, Saab and Volvo of old instead of just being another subdivision of a conglomerate that instead of being innovative and creating their own brand would rather spend money and buy up others history and image and then slowly migrate their homogonized styles and components making many "different" brands that are somehow all the same....good for the consumer that is only concerned about cost and reliability and repair, bad for those who appreciate the industry, the history and some of the uniquness that brands/makers had to offer at one time.

Mazda seems to have quite a few 2003 6s left over.
You can view inventory at local dealers right on their website.

I would also lean towards the Mazda because of recent VW quality issues.

Saab did V4's. But then again, look at what company we're talking about;):p
