Buying a car because of the headroom a valid excuse?

I was wondering if you, Anandtech, were/are a parent and if you had a kid that was tall and they complained about the cars they're allowed to drive and therefore wanted to buy another car that would give them more headroom, would you consider that a valid excuse? I mean the head room isn't to the point where they have to tilt their head or bend back their seat but their head is rubbing against the interior of the roof and it's uncomfortable/annoying for them.

how would that affect you?

if the answer is yes.. then yes.

If his head is rubbing against the roof just imagine what would happen in a roll over. More likely though he'll hit a pot hole or bump, then the roof. A sore head and distracted trying to drive isn't such a good idea so yes it's a valid reason.

I'm 6'4 and have never had a problem fitting inside of a Honda Civic, Accord, Toyota Camry, any Subaru, Mercedes and even a couple times a Del Sol and a Miata. And don't forget i'm tall because of a longer abdomen/chest/neck. I wear 32 length pants. You really have to be about 6'8 for a car to seriously have this problem.

Either they are being assholes and sitting straight up with the seat perfectly straight and not relaxing or.. They are just being an asshole.

It's a valid excuse for his WANTING a different car. It's not a valid reason for you to buy another one. Just tell him to slouch. 🙂 If it's HIS money, then it's fine.

How tall? I'm 6'6 and fit in almost every vehicle I've ever sat in. Leg space in the back seat was my only problem.

I'm 6'4 and fit ok in my gf's mini cooper. But I have to tilt my head to the side near the sunroof if she hits bumps, otherwise my head smacks the ceiling and that hurts.

I completely agree.

I'm 6'4" and I have lots of trouble with leg room in cars (both in front seats and back seats), but I've never had trouble with head room. Obviously it depends on the person, though. If their head actually is bumping up against the roof, then yeah I'd call it a problem.

I am 5'3". All of my serious girlfriends have been 5' or less.
I find it very unlikely I will ever produce a child who needs more headroom.

Hypothetically, if he did, I will tell him to stop whining and get a job and buy whatever car he likes. Kids nowadays need to suffer a lot more, so they can appreciate shit when they earn it.
By the time I have a kid and he's 16, I suspect it will be even worse.

parenting....

we need another world war, that will harden these kids up

Valid excuse to want another car: yes.
Valid excuse for you to buy them another car: HA HA!

edit:
There's nothing stopping them from saving up and getting a car that they really want. But they gotta do the work to get there.
