Buyer's remorse: Coolermaster Cavalier 2

I picked up a Coolermaster Cavalier 2 for my HTPC that has been over a year in the making. I have a micro atx motherboard, so I could have gone with the ATC-620C-BX1, but I liked that the Cavalier 2 supported full atx motherboards. Sadly, the Cavalier doesn't allow me to use my Antec True330 that I'd been saving for this rainy day.

Hopefully I'm the only one that makes this mistake, or at least this can serve as a warning to others who are considering this case.

Why not just use the 300W PSU that comes in it? I seriously doubt you'll miss the 'extra' 30W of power between the two PSU's.

As for pictures, newegg has several here

I also bought the Cavalier for HTPC applications like the OP did...

The stock TFX power supply works fine, yep... However, I would much prefer something quieter for an HTPC.

I was OK with it actually... But I wanted something quieter, so I went and got a Silverstone LC03 instead.

The Silverstone feels a lot more solid and takes a standard ATX powersupply, for which I got a Seasonic Super Tornado (which is really quiet). I was in heaven.

to the OP: If you can, RMA the Cavalier and get yourself a Silverstone. You won't regret it. 😀

I didn't take pics. The proprietary PSU is just as tall and deep as a standard ATX (from what I gather) but the standard ATX is about 2 inches too wide to fit in the same space.

No, it's not a secret, but it IS rather unusual.

It's not that I want the extra 30w of power, I just want the silence and "fan only" power plugs that my Antec offered. I do take comfort that the 60mm fans that were included do not power up when plugged into the fan only plugs of my Antec. 🙂

It's just not worth the hassle and extra money to me to ship it back to Xoxide and order a different case. My budget was $100, and I stretched it a bit for this one. The Silverstone cases are a little out of my price range.

I can always mod the PSU with an L1a if I find it makes too much noise once it's set up in my living room.

That power supply is not quite proprietary... It's the TFX power supply I mentioned earlier. TFX is a form factor.

You can buy TFX-form-factor PSUs... But the selection unfortunately is a bit limited.

Sometimes one has to sacrifice functionality for looks though, that's fer sure... I'm debating whether or not to pick up a Silverstone LC02 case for my next HTPC, which is a VERY slick-looking case but uses an SFX-form-factor PSU. But seeing as how great an experience I had with the standard ATX Silverstone LC03, I just might bite..

Yeah, a lot of these compact cases are using an SFX or TFX PSU. Usually it's easy to tell from the pix or spec sheet.
