INQ reported today that Opteron prices will increase and X2 prices decrease on the 23rd to "stop enthusiasts buying them, and buy the consumer level chips instead."

Will it have its desired effect? Or will people still buy the Opterons?

Opteron's value is a big part of what makes them so attractive. The consumer x2 chips are great chips imo, and if they start reflecting a lower price in relationship to the opterons, their sales will def increase. That said, opertons are still one heck of a chip so my feelings are missed.

They care when people start buying Opterons for "desktop" use instead of regular Athlon64s.

Of course, I'm not sure why the Opteron "server" chips were priced cheaper than the "desktop" chips to begin with... seems only logical to me that people would buy a cheaper version of the same thing.

Because they target certain chips to certain markets. When that market does something unexpected, like buying a non-targeted CPU, it throws all their financial predictions off.

Just got my 146today from Tankguys, and now his site no longer even lists 144 or 146's.
Looks like I got mine just in time. :)

Muwahaha, ordered a 148 from NewEgg on the 17th, and the price has already gone up from $233 to $256. Lucky me :)

I think the Opterons will sell even with a price increase. 2.7 to 3ghz with the stock HSF is hard to ignore.

Yea, I just looked around, and all Opteron prices are already jumping up. I guess I should have purchased two, and saved one for Ebay.

Come on now, CPU prices drop over time, everyone knows that. Prices may go up in the short term, but in the long run prices will plummet, especially once intel becomes more competetive once again.

yep, I agree .Forget Intel , when AM2 is released, the s939 prices will come down across the board. Anway, the title should have been "buy ur opterons now buy after AM2 release" lol :)

the 170 from $384 to $394 - ok who cares? this is only 10 bucks!
the X2 3800+ from $322 to $295 - this is what makes it painful!

the difference of $37 takes a lot away from the vaue of the opterons.... I was going to say that the 170 is still a better value than the 4400+ though, considering

I'd buy your opterons now, or buy your X2's later. If you miss this window, you may be waiting until AM2 for a good deal. :)

Bought a Retail 170 today. $405@ZZF ($60 less than the Egg).

Edit: The 170 was $400 flat at ZZF yesterday!

And you'll need a new MB and RAM. That's an extra $300 or more (can be a lot more for guys who like SLI boards and LL RAM). Not a good deal there.

I'll be staying S939 for awhile yet.

If you'll need to buy a new MB and RAM anyways, then you might want to wait and just save money up so you can get a nicer system.

If you are only upgrading the CPU, then waiting would be foolish unless you are simply waiting for the AM2 release to lower S939 prices.

Initial AM2 gains with DD2 will be minimal...I've heard 5% performance gain. But since it will all be new, it will likely be more expensive. NF4/S939 is at the top of its game right now: mature/lower prices = higher value.

My take anyway. But I'm bias as I just spent $2K on a new system.

The sad thing is I'm still happy w/ my Winnie @ 2.4Ghz if I replace the HSF I could get more but for what I'm running its good enough until I go dual core :)
