I'd be interested to hear why you think a 19X12 gamer on a budget is better off with a >$500 4870X2 than the 4870, GTX260 OC, and 9800GX2 he could get for under $300 and have $200 left for the thing that means more to any college student on the planet than anything else:

Female college students.

Any of those three cards play 19X12 at very high levels, and if I'm this guy, I buy the 4870 or 260, pocket that $250+ and take favorite willing classmate on two romantic dinners and enjoy
sport that kicks the crap out of gaming after.

(love my gaming, but anyone tries to tell me I need a better video card more than seeing strangers nekkid, we'll be playing Ro Sham Bo with me going first)

Plenty of time after college to buy $500 video cards, when the money doesn't have to come from birthdays and student loans. Take your girlfriend out for a nice dinner that night instead.

Good point to bring up nRollo. Need to get the head out of the hardware sometimes and look at the other things that matter besides having a top notch piece of equipment that is constantly being outdated. An update to what I am looking at currently is the 4870 black edition, gtx 260 vanilla or oc version, or picking up a 9800 gx2. Now that is the question...what to do what to do? (maybe, just maybe, get a 280 with a rebate for around $369 or lower if it happens in the next week or so)

sorta too bad it isnt the time like the 8800gtx era. ppl that bought that card sure got to use it to its true potential since there were no real ati competition.
