Buy used car that has 100K miles?

I'm thinking of replacing our other Olds Intrigue. Saw a luxury car dealer ad for a 2001 Aurora V-8 (!!) that has almost 100K miles. If I bargain the price to . . . say $9000, do you think it's a good buy? (Assuming clean title, no defects other than normal wear and tear.)

That V-8 is going to haul major assage!

My p/u had 119k on it (92 dakota) has almost 150k now. paid $1,400
my car had 115k (ish) on it now just passed the 150k mark (82 accord hatch) paid $450

Edit: added the cost of them

Yeah, that poor Aurora probably has less than 50K miles left before it needs some major repair like an engine or transmission rebuild. I wouldn't pay $5,000 for it, let alone 9,000.

I would take a 2001 model with 100k over a 1995 model with, say, 15k.

So long as it was treated well and taken care of, it's fine. An engine needs to run to stay healthy.

100k isnt that much anymore...
most of the cars ive bought have had that much..

all my stangs had around 90-100.. and all ran well past 200k..

I would never buy a domestic (or a european car) with that kind of mileage unless I could do all of the work for the car's known trouble spots myself

and certainly not for that price

i think it depends on the car. some cars are notorious for having certain issues around a certain age (milage wise). i dunno much about domestic cars, but i bought a 93 accord two years ago that had 155k. its at 206k right now. only thing i did was change timing belts and radiator.

I bought a '91 Grand Prix in 1997 w/ 146,000 miles for $5500, sold it in '01 w/ 250,000 for $2500. It was a pretty good car for me 🙂

Yes on a few conditions.
1) You plan to use it for ~5 years. Significantly less or more would kill the deal.
2) It is a car that is typically quite reliable.
3) The car is in great condition.
4) The price is reduced sufficiently to offset the higher expected repair bills.

I bought a used 1999 Acura TL with 120,000 miles last year (it was virtually all highway miles in a interstate delivery business). Runs flawlessly so far. Price was very good. I plan to sell it around the 190,000 mark.

An Aurora over 100k miles is not worth it. You'll need plenty to spend on repairs.

I'd only buy a Toyota or Nissan if it's over 100k miles

Yes, but that is because I'm an experienced mechanic and I choose the vehicle carefully. It has to be one I am familiar with and have the necessary tools to maintain it without much additional cost.

On another note the Olds Aurora is a very decent car with few issues but they can be expensive to repair because they are based on the Cadillac Northstar engine.

Good Luck,
