buy system now or wait for nex gen stuff

esc

Senior member
i'm thinking of getting a p4 1.6a to try overclocking. will it be wise to buy now or should i wait for the 533mhz pentium or amd's new offerings? i'm in no hurry, i'm just getting bored and want some fun.

Well the 533mhz Pentium 1's won't be coming out for another 5 years, technology isn't that quite current yet.

?

533 will be in oct this year so if you want to pay the higher prices at the start or wait 6 months or more to let the prices drop then you will be waiting over a year amd has the hammer coming out and that is ? so if you have the money now by all means go for it if your looking to build a dream machine who knows if you will have the money when you need it?

i waited 3 years trying to decide on a must have hardware configuration guess what i'm still waiting lol so hmm now i have 3400.00 toward my dream machine but...lol

get what you want if it means waiting then wait but realize the more time you wait the more that comes out😉

i started out wanting a p-4 2.2 etc and a scsi drive now i'm looking at a raid scsi 15000 and dualies

hope this helps lol

It's really up to you. Today's latest stuff runs current generation fantastic, and next gen quite well as well. If I were choosing, then well, I'd wait for ClawHammer just because it looks so cool!!!!!😀😛 But, if you do build now, at least wait for 533fsb+PC1066 RDRAM+850e, that setup will be significiantly faster than any DDR setup.

i hope there will be a p41.6a counterpart in the 533fsb pentiums because currently, i have at least $600 for mobo+cpu+vid card and maybe memory. if i don't go 533, i'll go clawhammer for sure. but my xp1700+ will last me at least 2-3yrs if i don't get any system. it's very sad if you like big parts but have little money..and it's also hard because i'm still a high school student... 🙁 the oem craze caught me at a very very wrong stage of life. guess i'll have to rely on my parents on that for a while. thanks again ATers for your advice.

i heard 533 fsb pentium 4's were coming in May, according to an article I read a couple of months ago.

I you waited for nex-gen stuff you would wait forever as there is always something new coming out. What I do, is wait for word when the next major crap comes out, when it comes out, I get the crap that was out before! 🙂

oops my bad found it here

<< Intel will release a 2.4GHz version in Q2 and a 2.5GHz version in Q3 - all of them with a 400MHz frontside bus. >>

<< During Q2, Intel will also debut the 533MHz FSB variant, dubbed Northwood B, at 2.53GHz. The following quarter, a faster, 400MHz FSB version - Northwood A - will ship at over 2.53GHz (2.6GHz?) >>

<< Intel will continue to roll out Celerons through 2002, with the 1.8GHz 0.18 micron P4-based part appearing in Q3, as we reported earlier this week. It will be accompanied by a 1.5GHz 0.13 micron Tualatin Pentium III version. Expect a 1.9GHz or 2GHz P4-based Celeron in Q4. >>

<< Come Q2 and Intel will release Tehama-E, the replacement for Tulloch. It will also offer (as we've reported before) Brookdale-G, which will add integrated graphics to the i845-D, the DDR200/266 version of the i845. Intel will also offer Brookdale-GL, which is essentially the same part but lacks Brookdale-G's support for an external AGP bus. >>

If you want the 533 FSB, then why not go with the Hammer? It's definitely (according to AMD) coming out this year, and Via's K8T333 will support a quad pumped 133 FSB (i.e. 533mhz) as well as SOI and AGP X8. The performance rating will be at least 3400Ghz, and the chip may well be cheaper than Intel's fastest (most expensive) offering, which should be at most, a P4 3.2ghz at the time the hammer arrives (if it does indeed arrive 4Q2002).

April 2002
·2.26GHz Pentium 4 - 0.13 micron Northwood B, 512KB L2, 533MHz FSB
·2.4GHz Pentium 4 - 0.13 micron Northwood A, 512KB L2, 400MHz FSB
·2.4GHz Pentium 4 - 0.13 micron Northwood B, 512KB L2, 533MHz FSB
·Chipset: Brookdale-G - PC133 and PC2100 DDR support - 400, 533MHz FSB - integrated 32-bit colour 3D graphics engine with AGP support - USB 2.0
·Chipset: Brookdale-GL - PC133 and PC2100 DDR support - 400, 533MHz FSB - integrated 32-bit colour 3D graphics engine (no AGP support) - USB 2.0
·Chipset: Tehama-E - dual-channel PC800/PC1066 RDRAM support - 533MHz FSB
·Chipset: Brookdale-E - PC133 and PC2100 DDR support - 533MHz FSB - USB 2.0

the whole part😉

sorry i looked for this yesterday and couldn't find this it only gave the older one? so please accept my apologies for screwing this up😱🙁

hope this helps and i will try harder next time😀

3400GHz? Wow, AMD sure is getting a little funny with those new ratings! 😀

I say buy now. By the time the Clawhammer and the others will come out, there will be something else new and exciting on the horizon. If you buy now, then you'll have already enjoyed 8 months of lightning speed by the time the clawhammer comes out.

hmm..maybe i'll just buy an extra stick of 256mb ddr right now. p4 1.6a may just as well be priced similarly to a stick a few months from now. my current is also quite fast for today's current standards anyway.

Doesn't matter when you buy the system. If you wait till that "next gen stuff" is out, then you could just ask the same question, because new stuff will be coming out then. You can wait till the VIA KT400 chipset comes out, but by then plans for a QBR (quad-band rate) memory chipset will be in the works. It just never ends. I try to find a midrange between performance and price. Like right now, a GF3 Ti would probably last you for awhile. There's not many games out yet that even use the GF3's feature set.

Ditto on "buy now and enjoy"; this whole never-ending technology race is crazy!!!!

A lot of people do run their 1.6a's at 533fsb. Personally, I'm trying to hold out until May when I think the new 533fsb motherboards will come out. At that time, I'll compare the latest offerings from AMD, but the 1.6A might be the perfect fit for one of those boards (unless you want to pay 100s more for a non-overlocked 2.2 - 2.4 chip).

<< my xp1700+ will last me at least 2-3yrs if i don't get any system. >>

If I had your current system, I would definitely wait until Fall or the end of the year at least for a system upgrade. I would spend money now on a graphics card, if you don't have a relatively current one (at least GF3 or Radeon 8500). And yeah, ram is always good (but 512 total is enough).

An upgrade now, or in the next few months, will only get you a few more excess fps at high rez on most games. It would also be a bit faster for video encoding or 3d animation type applications, but still probably not worth it, unless you're paid by the hour to do these tasks.

The old mantra is: "if you don't "need" it now, wait. If you are hurting for speed, buy now"

That being said, I do feel there are "sweet spots" for buying PCs, especially for those interested in overclocking. For example, the the earlier Coppermine PIII (500-700 mhz) were nice OCers without much fuss or worry. I'd say it would be better timing to get into an AMD Athlon system with the XP rather than the HOT running Tbird too. These Tualatins are nice upgrades even though you gotta replace the mobo to do it in most cases. If you follow the trends and read up, find out what peoples experiences and build a consensus... you can time it so you can get systems which are easier or less troublesome. This is all relative tho...

I disagree. Upgrade if you need to upgrade. Like you said, you don't have any rush to upgrade...so don't. If your computer can run everything without any serious drawbacks now, then wait until you need an upgrade. No sense in wasting money on something you don't need. Although in my case it's a bit of an extreme, I went from a K6-233 to a K7-1333.
