I could take a dump in a box and put it on the clearance rack with a $30 off sticker, but that wouldn't make it a hot deal.

p.s. which stores take no-receipt exchanges?

The good deal is NOT the fact that the game is $20, the deal is that you can "EXCHANGE a $20 game to get a $50 game".

I'd love to do this deal to get Metal Gear 2 for $20. Earlier this year I had exchanged NFL Gameday 2001 and Fantavision (which I bought for $20 each) for $100 credit at Best Buy, I think this is another similar opportunity.

I've done unopened exchanges at Best Buy, Walmart, and Electronics Boutique without a problem at my local stores in Columbia, MD. I'm sure many other stores will be allowing this soon because of Christmas season approaching.

It might be worth a try calling around to see if you can exchange unopened product.

Yeah, I didn't mean to crap your thread, it does look like Arctic Thunder is selling at some stores for $20 and others for $50. I know there are some stores in the area (Media Play) that will take unopened games back without receipts, for store credit, gonna see if I can get me GTA3 for $20. Good find if it works!

Sears would take return without receipt, but K-mart, Target, Toys R Us won't.

That's how I got GT3 for only $19. I was able to get quite a few games for $19. Just last week I was able to still get $50 credit, which I only did with one game.. but this week Sears adjusted their price for those games to be approx $30-$40... damn. O well. Will give Wall-Mart a try. Remember you can allso exchange it for accessories.

Here's what I have found so far. YMMV...

EB B&M - Arctic Thunder still marked at $49.99
FYE B&M - "
GameStop B&M - Didn't have it

EBgames.com - Arctic Thunder $19.99, 1 per customer
Gamestop.com - "

I hope this doesn't qualify as 'thread crapping', but doesn't buying a product at one store, and returning at a different chain without a receipt cross some moral/ethical boundaries ? Now you aren't punishing store A for selling something at a low price, you're punishing store B for store A selling at a low price...

Granted I'm no saint, but this really seems to be a questionable practice. Opinions ?

Well, what about PM with Staples then use the coupons?(too bad this is changing, AT effect:D) It's like the same thing.

I don't think it is the same thing. With a PM to Staples, their policy of matching the competitors price is being used to your advantage. With returning something bought at a different chain, you are just screwing over the store you are returning to - they aren't promising to match the price of their competitor, but you are forcing them to...

JMHO.

Personally, return policy is a big factor when I decide where I'm going to buy from. EB has a very lenient return policy (return opened games within up to 30 days with the receipt) which means that they probably get burned on deals like this once in a while, but they get all of my business because I know that I won't have problems returning games if I need to.

In the case of this deal, the stores aren't being victimized too badly.. they end up with a game that's still in the original shrinkwrap that they can turn around and sell at its full price. Granted, Arctic Thunder isn't going to be as hot a seller as.. pretty much anything else.. but it's still a new PS2 release.

On the other hand you have a store like Toys R Us who has a very restrictive return policy.. as far as I know they will now only take video games back for return if they are unopened and have the original TRU receipt. They don't have to worry about semi-shady deals like this one, but they also aren't getting any of my business.

I'd like to hear what other people have to say about this one.

It doesn't seem like the same thing to me. The companies wrote the coupon "rules" and they wrote the price matching "rules". If there is a loophole, it's their own. Besides, complying with the "rules" that they wrote is hardly a loophole. That's the type of Clinton double-speak we hear for 8 years with the Gun Show Loophole and the Assault Rifle Loopholes or whatever. A company complying with Clinton's own weapon imporation regulations was accused of exploiting a loophole. Does that mean when I drive 55 mph in a 55mph zone, I'm exploiting a loophole? They really want to give me a speeding ticket, but I slip through the "obeying the law" loophole?

Oops! Tangent much. Anyway, I'm certain that the return policy, (the return "rules") includes that the item must have been purchased at the store to which you are returning it, or at least from the same chain of stores.

I agreed with the spirit of your post, but I wanted to point at that what's going on is *worse* than just forcing a price match because it is not even on identical items. You're lying to a store, and without the lie, there would be no exchange. It's theft, probably a 4th degree misdemeanor.

It's definitely just a byproduct of certain stores' return policies. If they wanted to end this practice, they'd start giving out gift receipts (like Target).
