buy now or wait for video card?

Ok, I've decided with the following part for my new game computer:
MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum nForce3 Ultra Athlon 64(FX) Skt939 DDR ATX Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Processor Socket 939 Retail
Corsair VS512MB400 512MB DDR400 PC3200 CAS2.5 Value Select Memory
Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 ST3160827AS 160GB Serial ATA 7200RPM Hard Drive w/8MB Buffer
Zalman CNPS7000B-ALCU Pure Copper CPU Cooler Retail
Antec SLK3700AMB

nVidia 6600GT AGP

6600GT AGP is not in stock for either newegg or zipzoomfly. Presumably, the price for all parts and the video card would go down while waiting for the video card to arrive. Is that correct assumption? I have noticed newegg tends to go up and down with various parts though.

comment on my new system is also appreciated.

Actually, 6600GT AGP IS in stock at ZipZoomFly. I asked them to tell me if it was in stock (email-wise). Earlier today it wasn't, now it is back in stock. Get it HERE

$229 SHIPPED.

It should drop in price over the next few weeks. If ATI can get their AGP's in gear and give the 6600GT some competion, you could see more price drops. Still for $230, it a heck of a card.😀

It appears as though you are setting up a good system. Especially since you and I have quite a bit in common with systems.

Antec Sonata case with 380W Power supply
NEC/MITSUBISHI AS900-BK 19" CRT Monitor
SAPPHIRE ATI RADEON 9800 PRO Video Card, 128MB DDR, 256-bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP
MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum MoBo Socket 939
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Socket 939
NEC 16X Double Layer DVD±RW Drive
Seagate ST3160023A-RK 160GB Retail Box Ultra DMA100, 8MB Buffer, 7200RPM

I am stuck on ram though. Looking to get 2 of these Mushkin 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200
or 1 of these Crucial Ballistix 184-Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200. I may just wait for another good deal show in the deals section. Hopefully it includes a dual of the crucial ballistix for real cheap!

a question about harddrive...
the seagate barracuda I'm picking up has NCQ. Does the motherboard need to support it or is it dependent?

Yes, the motherboard must support NCQ.
Also, remember than a NF4 board (such as that new Epox board, can't remember the name) can use PCIe, allowing you to save 50$ or so by getting a PCI-e 6600GT or x700XT, while also allowing you to upgrade them far into the future.
Also, remember that RAM latency is less important than the amount; 1GB of relaxed-timings budget RAM will often get you performance better than 512mb of Crucial Ballistix. If you do'nt want to overclock, go with 1gb of Corsair Value Select(140$ at the 'egg) or 2 sticks of Patriot DDR500 (180$) if you want to reach the 3000+'s full potential.

NCQ needs mobo support. All of the nForce4 boards except the lowest level will have it; nForce3 does not.

Edit: Good call Cheesehead. You beat me to it. 🙂

Cheesehead,

That ePox board you are referring to, is that 939 board? I thought we were months away with PCI-e support on AMD board??

google'ed it. I think you are talking about P-9NPA+. I guess the questions are now:
1) How much would it be? Enough to offset the videocard cost with pci-e?
2) Is nforce4 worth the wait for NCQ support? How much gain? 20% from the harddrive's what I see.
