Buy my own modem or let the cable co provide one for me?

I'm moving so I have a chance to take advantage of RR's $29.99 for 6mo offer on new contracts. Currently I pay $44.00/mo for residential service and as far as I can tell the cable modem is free - no rental fee. Best Buy currently has a Motorola Surfboard SB5100 FAR if I sign up for RR at their store. I like the idea of FAR (something I can sell later if I don't need it or use if they ever want to charge a rental fee), but am I really gaining anything by owning my own modem?

I've heard that the surfboard modems are better than others but I've had -0- problems out of the generic looking modem they provided a year ago.

Buy a FAR Surfboard or let RR provide one?

[EDIT] It's hard to read the details in the online ad but it looks like I also get a $25 Gift card (by mail) when I sign up for RR at Best Buy. [/EDIT]

i actually bought a 5100 cuz i heard it was good. but my bandwith was 5kps lower then my rca one provided by comcast. i even exchanged it 3 times thinking it was fluke. motorola said they had a firmware fix but only comcast could fix it. comcast said they knew nothing about and it would not look into it futher.

Buying another Modem will not benefit you.

If you have free money give it to charity.
