The price and the distance of Sea Ray both combined in my decision to buy the HD7 now. My Pearl was starting to get really slow so it was time to get rid of it. I'm a huge fan of WP7 so far although my only other long term experience with a smartphone was the BB Storm right after it came out (I went from the Storm to the Pearl which was a little backward). After a whole three days of use I only have a few minor complaints (no unified message box is the big one) but the improvements over BBOS 4.5 more than make up for them.

Hate the expression "pulled the trigger" partly cuz its overused and partly cuz I shoot and dont like hearing stuff like that. But in this case its appropriate. Been agonizing over this decision for months but today I got a Tmobile SIM and ordered an HD7 from Amazon while waiting in line. Got it two hundred cheaper than MSRP. Also got a month-to-month plan I can live with.
When a good WP7 comes out (probably from Nokia) I will swap the SIM.

Can't wait for your review of the device and WM7.

I really like WP7 as an OS but I'm less fond of the HD7. I'm unhappy with the lock button which takes a lot of effort to use, the phone itself is HUGE but I knew that going in, and the battery life isn't stellar although it's getting better since I'm not fiddling with the phone every 30 seconds anymore. I can live with all these faults because they aren't deal breakers but, unfortunately, none of them are things Mango can fix with the possible exception of battery life. Hopefully the release of Sea Ray will put WP7 in hardware that lives up to the polish of the OS itself.

Which is why it's amazing you'd go back to a WP7 device.
I like the OS I just didnt wanna pay AT&T prices for service and hardware.
Shame cuz they have four Windows phones and everyone else has one. And I can deal with having fewer apps since what I need can be done with WP7. I dont care about games or multimedia besides Netflix. Wont listed to music on it for hours at a time either.
Will keep the Droid as a dedicated MP3 player for car and school (before class, obviously). Drag and drop is still a superior way to move music on a device. Do not like syncing.

That sums up how I felt about the HD7 when I owned it.. I was a t-mobile customer.. last summer.. I was on one of their no-contract plans w/ a t-mobile vibrant.

When the HD7 came out, I used my device credit line to purchase it.. but I returned it within 48 hrs due to the crappy screen, the stupid power button and the weak battery.

In the middle of november of last year, I went to at&t for the samsung focus and signed a contract with them. Sold my vibrant and paid off the amount I still owed on it.. and have been w/ at&t ever since.

OK, they pulled an Apple on me.
You HAVE to download, install and use Zune whether you fucking want to or not.
And it requires downloading tons of shit you dont actually need just to get updates to the fcuking fone.

Cock sackers!

Wow! The zune interface and phone update is even more gay than itunes. Good job guys, rip off the most annoying features of your competitors and make them even more miserable. Fun times.

Well, at least now I have copy & paste, which I never use. And apparently several other tweaks, which they didnt explain.
Sawright, big fat screen is as sexy as big fat Kirstie Alley, whom I love with my chubby little heart.

Yeah, I got my phone directly from Microsoft so it must have been completely up to date, right? Nope, it didn't have a single update installed. They're really fast to install and I already had the Zune software installed so it wasn't that big of a deal but I've never received a piece of hardware from a manufacturer before that wasn't up to date.

Is the HD7 the "flagship" WP7 right now?

Hard to say that, considering AT&T recently picked up the HD7S, which is the HD7 with a SuperLCD screen. Sales-wise, I believe the Samsung Focus is trouncing all of them.

WP7 doesnt have a flagship device right now which is probably a big part of their problem getting into and fighting in the marketplace.
The HD7 is the biggest but does not have the best screen, thats the Samsung Focus. It also doesnt have a hardware keyboard but I'm not missing it.
Nokia is supposed to have the first kick-ass Windows phone but thats a long time away.

Microsoft REALLY should have contracted with somebody to debut with a kick-ass device at launch.

Well, the best WP7 launch devices were overseas. The HTC Mozart and Samsung Omnia 7 were both superior to their counterparts stateside...I don't know if that was the US carriers' fault or what, but that's how it ended up.

Arguably, the highest quality build of the US phones is the Venue Pro, but it was delayed, only sold online, and barely advertised.

Not to mention it was plagued with problems. The firmware fix STILL hasn't been released, and is now supposedly coming out mid-July.

I was so close to getting a Venue Pro instead of the HD7. It was all the problems that scared me away (as well as the horror stories on Dell's support page and other forums).

Yeah the HD7 is far from perfect (for example I cannot disable the haptic feedback) but its a well known device with plenty of accessories and I was able to play with a working model at the Tmobile store. Not to mention I found a used one cheap on Amazon.

If I were more courageous I would have got a European model but it felt too risky. I can deal with the HD7 until Nokia has one on the market.

The VP has its share of issues, sure, but really, they aren't as bad as the forums makes it sound. The firmware fix (that's supposedly going out next week finally) is for the wifi issue, where basically using wifi + the marketplace could crash.
