Buy Bolt in NYC? (I live in GA)

Ichinisan

Lifer
I'll be on an international trip with friends and the return flight will leave me in NYC around 6/19. We had planned to drive a rental back to GA.

I *really* want a Chevy Bolt. It's already available in NYC and won't be available in GA until September. I'm seriously considering the possibility that I might buy a Bolt in NYC and drive it back to GA instead of driving a rental.

Is there still a waiting list? Should I call the first NYC Chevy dealer that comes up on Google?

Buying across state lines, is there any complication that might prevent me from buying it or getting insurance?

IMHO if you want to do that line up the deal before you leave on your trip. Then all you need to do is pick up the vehicle and drive it home.

There should be zero issues with insurance or anything else. You may have to register the car yourself instead of the dealer doing it but some dealers may know the drill.

Just be careful where the car is registered. If you have to do it again in Georgia, you will pay tax a second time.

It should never be registered in NY. Besides, how can the car be registered in NY if the OP has no residence there?

I went to test-drive a Bolt yesterday...they got it delivered in the morning, but it was already sold & gone by the time I got there after work, arg!

FWIW, the dealer I went to is apparently a Bolt flagship dealer & will be getting in bucketloads over the next month...all of the other dealers in the area were only getting in like, one. So if you can't find one in NYC, let me know...the Chevy dealer right outside Hartford has like 8 coming in next week & more after that (although half of them are already spoken for!).

I was down in Atlanta recently. It's just about 1,000 miles from Hartford, so you'd need about 5 pitstops if you wanted to go full-bore. If you can find Level 3 chargers on the way down, those can do a full 238-mile recharge in about 2 hours. So that's about 16 hours of driving & 10 hours of charging (bring a Kindle!). There's a good article on road-tripping in a Bolt here:

I think this is the first legit electric car for the masses. The price isn't awful for what it offers, it beats out the base Tesla Model S by range, and it doesn't scream "I'm an EV!", which is nice. 238 miles eliminates a LOT of range anxiety for me. And most of the places that I fix computers at have a charger either onsite or nearby, so the infrastructure availability isn't completely useless anymore.

You might be better off just arranging to have it shipped. Shipping ~1000 miles open transport shouldn't be too stupidly expensive ($1000 maybe?) and the lack of charging options make it a terrible road trip car (for today anyway). It might be tolerable by yourself depending on how you value your time but when you start talking about eating multiple man days worth of time $1000 starts to look like a bargain.

I was about to say, just don't crash into a Honda Goldwing with that, but it has a curb weight of 3600 lbs 😱

You only pay tax in the state where you title/register it. If the NYC dealer collects any tax, it would be forwarded to GA.
