Buy a Sun Microsystems box at wallmart for 300 bucks.

Funny stuff. Walmart is the current leader in Linux desktop computer sales.

They are offering x86 boxen running Sun's Java OS for dirt cheap

Actually they are selling them under the "Microtel" brand name, which I assume is the generic computer brand for walmart.

They also have a Suse box for 600 dollars (currently sold out), and Lindow's computers from 300-400 dollars.

Sun's boxes range from 300-700 dollars. Top of the line is a 3.06 mhz pentium 4 (HT-enabled) with what seems a Intel chipset, 80gig harddrive, Combo DVD/CD Read/Write drive, with 256megs of ram and integrated everything in the motherboard.

The Operating system itself is actually Suse Linux, with the Java desktop and Sun's Staroffice.

Seems like a nice box for a kid's homework, or office desktop, or a general knock-about Linux box.

(you can get approx. the same thing with Windows, 750 dollars will get you XP home (no MS Office of course) with the 2.6ghz proccessor, and 900 will get you a windows computer with the same 3.0ghz P4 but with a extra 256megs of ram and a larger 120Gig harddrive)

wal-mart is the only company with big enough cash filled balls to take on ms. how... odd.

pretty funny if they turn out to be the champion of the oss wars.

Well you hate Walmart and hate Microsoft, but you like Sun, so foiling the inherent evil of MS cancels out the oppressive profiteering and general tackyness of Wallmart which only leaves the factors of Sun combined with Linux and StarOffice in a box you know will work without any tinkering at a realy cheap price.

So your hakerish/catlike curiosity of the "Java Desktop" combined with the normal desire for cheap electronic devices should get the better of you and you should feel the intense need to buy a Sun Java desktop computer from Walmart.com.

Sun isn't at the top of my list (at home, work is another story all together). They aren't an open company no matter how much they try and convince people they are. That's why I buy used Sun hardware 😉

And I can get the Java Desktop thingy for like $50, and better hardware for less ($200 for everything but case/powersupply/video card (of which I have extras of each 😉).

I'd definitely recommend it to someone that is looking for a cheap alternative and doesn't have the hacker attitude.

I don't really have much of an opinion of it. My point is that a garbage PC with sun-branded linux is a far cry from "a Sun box." Your topic is misleading. 😉

I just won a couple of Sun systems on Ebay (ultra1e and Sparcstation 20) and the shipping almost doubled the price I won them for! Outrageous. But that's quality for you. Hopefully the things work 😛

I don't know what I'll be using them for yet (besides learning). These will bring the Sun count up to 4 in my house. I just setup my ss10 (36mhz!) to netboot off of my Athlon system, and I'll probably do the same with the ss20. It gives me a chance to get my hands dirty with NFS and maybe find a use for those systems. They can't reach the net just yet though, so that will have to wait until I get a new firewall (no upgrade potential in the current firewall).

The ultra 1e might stay Solaris for a while. I'm thinking of installing the 10 beta just for giggles.

The Ultra 10 will be netbooted when I get time to set it up. I think I need new ram for it though, so I'm not expecting much right now. New ram will come next month (found some deals).

Over all, the sun systems are worthless for most people. I just like wierd things. Non-x86 architectures are interesting to me. Also, the sparc4m (I think) and the sparc4u support W^X better than i386, and since a reasonable amd64 machine would cost me over a grand (have to go opteron 😀), this is the best way to get that support.
