Buy a Notebook Now or Wait for Santa Rosa?

I know people say to buy a computer 'when you need it'. My laptop died a long time ago and I've been using my desktops which are fine, but lately I've been pining for a laptop.
There's something about being able to easily take it with you...

Regardless I do mostly graphics, surfing, writing, email, and light games.

I'm looking at the Mac Intel Laptops.
The multiple OS capability on one machine really works for me as I'm usually sitting between a Mac & a PC. :music:

Thanks! 🙂

I concur.... 🙂

Wait if you can...

With Santa Rosa, hopefully Robson will start to show up as well, and the Faster FSB for the Core 2 Duo's will be of great help under Vista (hog)

when do you stop waiting tho?

i'd buy a macbook pro when the c2d refresh happens. my g4 is getting long in the tooth, but i'm hoping c2d will help with some of the heat problems since it runs so cool.

Buy when you are #@* good and ready. If you keep waiting for the next thing to come out, you won't stop waiting. There is ALWAYS something else around the corner.

You're actually in a great position. You had the patience to wait through the MacBook/MacBookPro stuff for the next next-gen laptop. When all of the early adopters go to the latest and greatest from Apple, you'll get their leftovers pretty cheaply. That's if you want their leftovers 😉

Thanks all!

A few yrs ago I sadly got one of the first G5 desktops.
I wish I had waited for at least revision 2...
Regardless it is really starting to drag. However I mainly use graphics programs on it, and Photoshop, for one, doesn't exist in Universal format so I'm quite willing to wait for a new desktop. If I've been reading stuff correctly there will be "true" quad processors or something towards the end of 2007? I never thought I would find myself studying Intel roadmaps so closely. 😛

But looking at the laptop roadmap the early 2007 Santa Rosa upgrade looked interesting and would help me get by, but I'm wondering if it's that much of a change from the current Merom Macbook Pros.

It's just that sometimes, when something new & exciting that will really change how things work is on the horizon, it's worth waiting a few months. 🙂

I'm just trying to figure out if Santa Rosa is something like that... ^^

I'm in the same boat as you. I want a new laptop now, but I've been holding off for the free Vista upgrade vouchers. But at the same time, I see Santa Rosa coming around the corner, while I don't care too much about the boost in FSB or the updated wireless platform, I am extremely intregued by the upcoming Robson technology that's part of the whole Santa Rosa platform.

Robson will be interesting, but I hope Intel's solution is faster than the SSD drives that have come out already. They have piss-poor performance compared to a standard HDD, although slower Flash performance shouldn't matter as much with Robson since it isn't the primary storage device.

Check out all the hardware site's IDF coverage (like Anandtech's), they should have good info about Robson.

Waiting months for Core 2 Duo when Core Duo came out would be rather foolish. Santa Rosa, however, is a much greater leap in technology.

I will wait. I hope it comes out early '07 ^^
