All of the eligible switches retail for $800+, so this isn't a deal for the casual home user. Not a bad deal if you were wanting to buy one of the switches anyway, but it's not worth buying a switch just for the free iPod.

Seems like this is designed for a specific audience as the rebate form says "Quantity limited to one ipod per sales rep/company."

Consider talking your boss into upgrading the company network,
and offer to buy the switch for them,
turn in a copy of the receit, and youve got yourself a nice christmas present.

I just got a 24 port 10/100/1000 switch from dell for only $169. I can buy an ipod and still be under $800. Not very hot to me.

Managed switches are cool becuase you can tell very specific things about each person's connection- even if they have a virus or not! Too much $$$$ though unless you're going to do this for work or something.

it'll be great for SBC's fiber-to-home that's due out in each neighborhood in 2-5 years

that's 6-10Mbps. u can frag with 1ms lag. only problems is SBC refuses to deploy it until the FCC promises they won't have to lease it out to ANY competitors, saying they can deploy it in 2 yrs if they can strike a deal. otherwise they threaten it will take 5 yrs without the agreement.

easy solution: FCC should just say "ok roll it out all in 2 yrs and you won't have to share it, but if you're a single day late, time to share with Covad"

and u can bet they won't be able to roll it out nationwide in 2 yrs, heck Project Pronto (nationwide DSL) ran 3 years behind schedule

Whats the going market price on those switches? Buying one, getting an ipod and ebaying the switch might be an option to some.

If you think it's not hot, you've evidently not used Managed switches before, yes, this is not a discount on the actual equipment, it's essentially a kickback to the jarhead who recomends and orders it.
Since everyone seems so quick to to say but I can get a dell for a hundred bucks, you are way off base, these are full-throughput managed, fully switched gigabit switches, this is not for SOHO, an equivalent switch form dell is going to run you 1-3000 dollars.

Yup, Dell prices lately tend to cool this deal down a bit. And to the OP, beware that that NIC (GA311) does *not* have drivers available for Win2003 Server. I found this out the hard way. On top of that, the drivers for win2k/xp actively refuse to install on win2k3

I wonder how much it would cost to have fiber to home connection.
