Buy 5770 for $150, or spend double on 5850?

Hey all. I need suggestions. I'm building a new PC, and I was wondering if I should spend $340 to buy a 5850, or $150 to just stick with a 5770? Here are my other specs:

CPU: Intel i5-760
MoBo: Gigabyte P55A-UD3 motherboard
RAM: 4GB DDR3 1333 memory
Resolution: 1680x1050 <--- won't be playing higher than this

Should I spend double on 5850?

*: I don't use AA, if that helps.

Edit: I live in Canada, so please don't inform me of USA sales and whatnot.

I wouldn't get a 5850 for 1680x1050. If you wanted to spend more, take a look at a GTX 460 1GB, otherwise stick with the 5770.

Oh yeah, I heard about the 460. It's only about $40 more, but is it much better than the 5770? And is it a great product?

I'm not too familar with nVidia; always been the ATi type of guy. :D

For that res I would save the money and get the 5770. If you want more look for a good deal on the 5830. The GTX460 is also a good card that fits in between the 5770 and 5850 in price and performance.

Personally this time between major releases is the perfect time to buy used.....

Find yourself a used 4850 for under 100 bones since your res barely needs integrated :p

Those 50 dollar 9800GTX's I have seen would do the job as well.

I had already considered getting older cards, but I'd much rather get something newer to be more future-ready.

Tough question, the 5770 is a good card however personally I'd go with the 5850. Moving to the 1GB 460 however is also a good solution and if you can get one priced between the 5770 and 5850 go for the 460. The 5770 has a 128 Bit bus and could potentially present a bottle neck even at 1650 x 1080 on some games.

surely you are capable of finding the numerous gtx460 reviews including the one right here on anandtech?

you have a really nice setup that can push any card and to me a gtx460 is certainly worth it over the 5770 at 1680x1050.

I got a 5770 for about $125 for 1680x1050 and it's been perfect. So far only played Dragon Age and Borderlands on it, but I can turn both those up all the way and still have fantastic FPS. And if I ever find myself needing more power, I'll find another cheap 5770 and go xfire.

This all depends on the prices you can get the cards for and how much do you want to spend, since all of them should allow you to have a good game experience at that resolution, especially with no AA.

Is a 5850 really worth double the cost of a 5770?

At you resolution it isn't. But if it is only $80-100 more it can be.

The same goes for the 5830 (for $30-40 more), GTX 460 (for $50-60 for the 1GB model) and 470 ($100-110 more).

All good cards if the price is right.

Another option, that is probably overkill, but the fastest of the bunch and within your budget would be two 5770's. 5870+ performance for GTX460 pricing.

If I were you, OP, I'd just get a used 5770 for $100-130 and be done with it.

You can get GTX470s for $230-240 from TigerDirect.com and 5850s for $260 (egg). GTX460 @ $240 is not the best bang for the buck.

OP, 5770 is perfectly fine for your intended resolution. It's hard to do better for just $125!

if you use bing in the next 4 days or so you can get 15% off at tigerdirect still. so a 768mb 460 would be like $170.

It's been shown there is no memory bottleneck on the 5770.

I think maybe is was Ars that tested it.

My brother runs two 5770s in crossfire. That should perform better than a single 5850.
He bought them at the time because the 5850/5870 were harder to get and more expensive.

But since I have a 5770 myself, and have ordered a GTX460 1 GB, I'd recommend you do the same.

so now he needs a $500 hot running, noisy, power sucking card to play games at 1680? sorry but that advice is ludicrous especially since he cares nothing about AA. a gtx460 is plenty for 1680.

No, that was a typo, sorry.
It is a GTX460 1 GB that I ordered (GTX480s don't come in 1 GB, do they?).
