Actually the backbone is already there. We have more unlit fiber running across this nation than we know what to do with.
Its the last mile combined with ancient wiring/central office equipment.

The idea of the telephone was conceived in Canada, invented in America if you believe Bell invented it. I think an Italian immigrant in the US is believed to be the inventor nowadays.

0.008% is declining. They crossed that threshold this year I believe. There are now as many old people in Japan as young people.
