I'm a friendly kind of guy and I chat up my coworkers and others in the building (big building I work in). Just went and did my morning rounds and bumped into this guy that I chat w/once in awhile. I know he's very religious, so I ensure to not bring up religion and I also watch my language around him...I give him that much respect.

We are both Fathers. I have a six-year-old son, he has three kids, 3-to-10, I think. We were chatting about what I did w/my son last weekend. Here's a brief snippet:

Him: So, what did you do with your son last weekend?
Me: Blah, blah, I also took him to see "Lilo and Stitch" the new Disney movie. It was OK. Have your kids seen it?
Him: Oh goodness no...those movies are bad...they are not Christian movies!
Me: Uh...um, yeah man, but it's a KIDS movie. You know, for like kids?
Him: I understood you the first time. But is it a CHRISTIAN movie?
Me: Well, not really...but it's a lot of fun and my son loved it!
Him: My children don't watch any TV nor do they go to the movies at all. They only watch bible tapes that my wife and I purchase for them
Me: Well, that's ok, but don't you think you are limiting their "scope of learning" by restricting them to "bible-only" tapes?
Him: Nope.
Me: Well, look at the time...gotta go....

And that was it. Those poor children! I'll bet he whips them with a belt while yelling "OUT SATAN! Be goneth out of my child, DEVIL!" :(

Don't you guys think that his children are not going to have the same "scope of knowledge" that their peers have? The bible is OK, but it's not the world. There IS other stuff out there....

Yea, they might turned out all screwed up...but we don't really have any right to tell him how to raise his kids.

From a practical standpoint, if he wishes his children to be Christians, it would be best to acquaint his children with the world as it is. He may give his perspective and guidance, but ultimately, they will choose their path. If they are ill equipped to deal with people of other viewpoints, there will be backlash in a big way.

And he is being an ass.

Poor kids. Of course as their father what he teaches his kids is his perogative but how can that be anything but a disservice?

Kid #1: Oh man! What did you guys do last weekend? I saw The Matrix VIII with the girlfriend, it was awesome wicked!
Kid #2: Dude you ain't trippin'! That was mad skillz!
Christian Movie Kid: My father doesn't allow us to watch movies with guns, violence, non-Christian religious dogma or women in leather pants.
Kid #1: Begone from ye social circle.

Or the kid could be a complete rebel and be dead of drugs by 19. Either way, sounds like a fun life. :)

Well, he's got the right to be a parent like that. Just like you have the right to take your kids to see Lilo & Stitch.

There's no problem with that unless he's trying to convert you.

that's a HUGE jump in logic from the short conversation you had. That is just as small minded as your accusing him of being. live and let live.

LMAO! I can picture Kid #1 whipping out a Pilgrim hat and an Abe Lincoln beard, putting both on in like, .002 seconds and saying that. :D

That guy is an ass. Those are the kind of Christians that annoy me - they come off as so pretentious when they say things like that, they give a bad name to the rest of us. What the hell is wrong with letting your kids watch a non-Christian movie? Granted, Lilo and Stitch is a Disney movie, so it's inherently evil anyway, but only letting his kids watch Bible videos is asinine and retarded.

<-- Christian who regularly watches non-Christian movies, tv, etc. (especially South Park :D)

"TV doesn't make you stupid, TV makes you NORMAL."

Like snow patrol the first thing I could think of was posting "Does this guy's name sound like Ed Blanders?"

Anyway, sure he has a right to raise his kids that way, but that doesn't make it sensible :)

BTW, MichaelD, thanks for the sig quote :D

Actually that guy's being a good father.

If you actually analyzed the type of content that most "children" movies have now... you'd see that they aren't really for children at all. I plan on restricting all TV/Movies from my younglin's, because it's most influential in their toddler years as far as the thought process development in their brains. They can watch anything they want when they're old enough to appreciate it, not just mimick it. Of course same applies with gifts... we're going to spoil them when they're old enough to appreciate the value of the gift, not when they're too young to remember it. :)

Kids are easy to brainwash, but you gotta watch your back when they get older and figure out all the tricks you pulled.

My aunt and uncle are kinda like that. They are almost TOO religious. they have 2 kids, a boy and a girl. Now, they are getting older and the boy is starting to rebel and is going completely girl-crazy to the point that what they(his parents) have taught him is going in reverse. He has been so sexually repressed that it is back firing in their faces. the daughter is heading in the same direction. they broguht them up to only watch and talk about religion. That is a dangerous thing to do in my opinion, granted, it is thier choice as parents.
