Busted my finger (soft tissue?) - what to do?

Was at a party this past Saturday and had to break up a fight (normally I wouldn't jump in but there was a firearm involved and we were all in danger). Anyway, I injured my middle finger though I'm not sure how exactly. The following day it was very swollen and I iced it/took ibuprofen. It also looked bruised on the middle knuckle. Since then I let the inflammation subside on its own and would wrap index/middle together in a sports wrap to reduce motion.

I have full range of motion, but a full finger curl hurts especially at the end of the curl. There's still some inflammation, but not too bad. I feel it mostly over the middle knuckle and the past couple days haven't seen much of a change. Any idea what this is? Is it just going to take some time to heal? Anything I should do differently? I've been going about my normal day to day, trying not to use it more than I need it.

TIA

Go to a doctor. I had the same thing happen and thought it was minor, but when it healed I couldn't straighten it anymore.

Go get it x-rayed. You probably just stoved it/jammed it. Still, best to be safe and get an x-ray. Take naproxen sodium (Aleve) and it'll help a little with pain and swelling.

Yes I need to ask. If I go and they find out something is fractured or maybe some soft tissue damage, what can they do besides tell me to get a splint? Which I can do myself.

Just get it looked it. Depending on the injury you might need some PT as well to get full strength and range of motion back. Splint it yourself to avoid it healing crookedly too, I had a finger bent backwards at the joint while playing basketball and neglected a splint because it was snapped right back into place, but after swelling went down I could tell it was crooked and needed a dynamic extension splint to bend the sucker back into place over time. It did as good as job as you could expect 5 weeks after the injury, but it HURTTTT like the 5 rings of hell when I had it on.

The day to go to the doctor was on Monday. It's been five days, and it's getting better (not getting worse). It's not even worth rubbing dirt on it anymore.

Move on.

i agree with this. i wouldnt go to the doctor and waste time and money. if you can move it, its not broken or at least not broken bad. i would be most worried about the nerve. if you have feeling at the tip of your finger, theres nothing a doc would do that you cant. just keep it taped up, dont use it. its already healing, i would bet itll be fine.

Better cut it off, just to be sure. Wouldn't want your finger to curl accidentally when you are shooting someone the finger would you? :hmm:

Should I keep it splinted as much as possible or in intervals?

The swelling has been the same for the past couple days, but I have been using it so maybe that's why. I do have full range of motion, it's just a little painful. It "looks" normal except that it's a little bigger (inflammation). The bruise on the knuckle is gone.

Is there an estimated time to heal with these sorts of things? Not liking missing workouts ...

You were given advice. If you are to fucking stupid to figure out if you should go to the doctor for what may be a broken bone its no surprise you didn't take the advice given.

Using a couple discarded smoke detectors, foil paper, a large film paper and cardboard, you can make your own one time use xray machine. Post the xray and we can take guesses as to what it is based on a DIY xray that probably wont look good.

Or you can go to the doctor.

I got very different advice, but thanks for your "contribution".

I'm going to help you. I offer my help as a person who has hands and fingers. I understand your pain. I too have suffered. I'm going to show you a picture of my hand so you will know that I too have suffered (but chose not to whine about it on ATOT... until now. 🙁 ).

You hurt yourself on Saturday, and the time to go to the doctor was on Monday. If it hurt badly enough, you would have gone to the doctor on Saturday... or on Monday. It didn't hurt enough. You're fine.

You're saying that it's getting better; not getting worse. You're fine.

If you really must do something, then rub some Vagisil on it; be liberal. You can rub it all over yourself; it'll help to lessen the shame.

I have a doctorate; it's not in medicine, but you should feel free to send me $600 for the advice that I've given.
