Busted laptop screen

So a laptop we bought last year was accidentally dropped and the screen busted. How much do you think toshiba would charge to repair or how much does it cost to a 3rd party repair it. Fyi the plastic case cracked when it dropped but the glass on the screen is fine. Im pretty sure something inside the screen part broke.

I'd look into doing it myself. AFAIC, any laptop repair that goes beyond replacing an hd/optical drive, adding memory, or other easy repair isn't worth it if it can't be done by the user. A repair costs a significant portion of the replacement cost. If I didn't want to fix the screen myself, I'd turn it into a desktop computer, and hook it up to an external monitor.

Replacing the LCD is actually a lot easier if you have the service manual. Just go scrounge one off of ebay.

And you can usually find service manual online provided it isn't some rare computer brand/model.

might just be the screen inverter. Shine a flashlight on it and see if you can see an image. My friend had a dell that was in a car crash that she thought was dead, but I saw it was just the inverter, $20 later and it was as good as new. Much cheaper than replacing the whole screen and was very easy to do.

remove the lcd.
once u got that far u know enought o put the new one in. double check model number on the back of lcd removed...and go to ebay.
its cheap and easier than u'd think.
just go slow

Ehhhh Inverter is usually 2 wires, and it's got a pretty specific plug, but the LCD itself you might have to run the wiring through the hinge and its all flat cables that are a little tricky if you're not used to them.

He said the plastic cracked. IE the frame, he mentioned nothing about the screen itself being cracked, that wouldn't be something you'd be able to tell if the LCD wouldn't even power on.

Last two laptops I've worked on had damaged inverters with their screen issues. :shrug:

Either way, it's relatively easy to pop the bezel off, and then it's only several more screws to remove the entire screen, but the wiring is always slightly different.

Last one I did I just changed out the inverter first, since I could see the image on the screen the backlight was just broken. That was also the cheaper of the 2 parts ($15).
That didn't fix it so I bought a replacement LCD for $50, and that fixed it. If it was dropped, this is probably what you need, I bet the backlight in the LCD panel is broken.

It's not hard to change out an LCD, just a few snaps and a few small screws, you might be able to find screenshots of how to do it online.

Depending on the laptop it might be easier to just buy the whole top piece off of ebay. For example a Dell D610 is incredibly easy to swap out the whole top panel rather than take apart the top panel and replace the inverter or LCD screen.

I wouldn't waste the time/money. Rather, just grab a monitor you have lying around and turn it into a desktop. Or you can do what I did: turn it into a Windows Home Server.

An EXCELLENT laptop can be had now-a-days for ~$700.

I broke mine a couple years ago, ASUS charged me $400 for the replacement plus S&H.
The lesson learned is never put your laptop in checked baggage.

Just do a simple google search. Since you'll pay with your CC, you'll be covered against fraud. To be safe though, I would do eBay and look at the ratings for the seller.
