BUSlink USB: a good way to transfer data?

Looking for a good, cheap if possible, way to transfer data between computers.

Zip internal 100 MB okay, $35, maybe limited.

Zip internal, 250MB, $60 ish.

Zip external USB 250MB, $130, can be carried from computer to computer.

I just learned about BUSlink. 40GB $160. Does it work? Is it reliable? Anybody have it/use it? Too expensive? Please comment.

Give us a better idea of your needs.

How much data does you need to transfer at once? What is the distance between the PCs? How mission critical is the data? What sort of speeds are you looking for?

I personally do not like Zip Drive for anything other than small data transfers with no expectation of long term archiving. I treat them pretty much as bif floppy diskettes. They are not fast but quick enough for small data transfers

If the two PCs are close, consider networking them together. That will probably be the most efficient way to move data and overall quickest way.

Portable USB 1.1 hard drives are nice but they are also expensive and slower than hard drives hooked up to a ATA controller or Firewire. The 11mbps transfer rate of USB comes out to a little more than a megabyte a second under idea conditions.

Another quick and efficient method is to burn it to a CD. If you transfer data enough, a few blank CD-RW could be more than worth the extra cost.

More details will help.

Thanks Windogg.

I have 4 home computers and a box at work as well. Home computers are within 50'. Have 100 MB Zips on 3. File transfer needs are erratic; but occassionally do I have 100+ Mb files (as for example when building a new computer and transferring data).

I am not familiar with home networking. Use Win ME.

Thanks in advance!

Do I understand correctly that the flash card is identical to that used in cameras? So I could go out and buy a Kodak 3200, get a flash card, and use this card interchangably as both a data transfer medium as well as picture medium?

Not so very expensive, I notice. Can choose capacity to meet need (and budget). Interesting option. Do these transfer at the USB max speed?

a usb flash card reader would be pretty slow.

I think buslink makes firewire 40 gig HDs as well. You just need a cheap firewire PCI card

firewire external drives are nice, but if you want something u can plug into virtually ANY computer, go USB 2.0.

stick in a USB 2.0 card (assuming your mobo doesn't support it natively) (you can even get combo USB/firewire cards) on your computer and use it at full USB 2.0 speeds...when you plug it into someone else's computer who doesn't have USB 2.0, it'll just drop transfer speeds accordingly (it'll drop into USB 1.1 mode)...

another option is getting something like an iPOD or other portable mp3 players that double as hdds...most do.

i've been using my rio500 as a small capacity one for some time now (with rioFXP software)...though smartmedia only comes in 128MB sizes - while compact flash comes in 1gb flavors.
