I'm going to the bay area for work for 2 weeks (3 weekends) in late January / early February. I'll be near Sunnyvale (NASA Ames Research Center actually). I've never been to the area and need some suggestions.

Obviously I'll go to the downtown San Francisco area one weekend. Any suggestions on what to see/do there? That leaves two more weekends open. I'm willing to drive quite a ways, too, to find something to do.

100% absolutely yes... primarily bop.

Check out Yoshi's in Oakland, or Pearl's in San Francisco.

Take a walk in Golden Gate Park, see the bridge, go to Ghiradelli Square. Some people are interested in Fisherman's Wharf but it's a tad touristy nowadays.

You're there for a fairly long time. My list:

-Chinatown for several meals
-North Beach for dinner & drinks
-South of Market aka SOMA for drinks and music:music:
-Golden Gate Bridge. Park and walk across
-Brunch at Top of the Mark. Roof top of the Mark Hopkins Hotel
-Get drunk and ride the cable car all over town
-The Castro is Boys Town... do that if that's your thing.
-Have a good mexican meal in the Mission District.
-Take BART to Berkeley and get stoned and start a protest.

 Have fun.
