Business travellers: If you travel for work ... do you get compensated?

If you travel for work and you travel on your personal time (like flying to/from a jobsite on a Saturday) does your employer compensate you in some form/fashion for travelling on your personal time ... or not?

For years my employer would not compensate travellers for long or weekend trips outside of duty hours. Recently this has changed whereas we are compensated via comp time.

I'm curious ... how is it where you work?
 
People usually just comp their time the week they leave. Say they are flying out Friday night, they might not come in the Monday of that week.

While gone they get 2 hrs vacation per day outside our town.
 
Typically what I've seen with most of our field sales and field support is that they are all on salary. The don't necessarily got compensated for their time, but you sure as heck know they take off early on some days to see their kids' games, go boating, etc. I think many of them kind of make their own odd hours as they see fit as long as they reach goal and make their numbers. They also take full advantage of the company card when traveling as far as decent food and drink. It's one of those trade-offs if you know you are in a position that travels a lot.
 
Nope. Salary is salary. Although, if I know I'm going to have to work on my own personal time, I might eat/drink a little "better" on the weekends.
 
travel comp time. If they won't compensate you for weekend travel go on Monday.



Always preferrable but not always possible. There are also instances where you spend upwards of 15 hours or more in a day getting to the site. You can't just grab a hotel at 9 hours into the trip and complete the rest of the trip the next day.
 
Works out pretty well for me as I'm hourly. I get paid door to door for travel, same for time on site - Paid from when I leave the hotel room.

I'm tracking to do 1100 hours of OT this year, so I'm not complaining.

No. But I get $65 per diem or eat whatever I want on the corp amex. Which I take full advantage of along with all the points I get.
 
I'm salary but charge my time hourly, so any time spent working (weekends or otherwise) gets billed to the customer, including travel time, etc. However, some casual overtime is expected and if we leave work early we need to account for that in our hours as well, so it cuts both ways.
 
If I'm travelling domestically, I usually try to do all of my travel during the week so it's not an issue. However, for international travel I usually depart on a Saturday so that I have a day to recover/acclimate to the time difference before the workweek starts. In this case, I'll just comp some time and come in late/leave early a few days the week I am back. On the other hand, I'm getting a company-paid trip to some pretty cool places, so I'm not really picky about it.
 
Salary, non-exempt. I am paid for those hours when traveling no matter what. I'm technically working, so you better pay me. Makes for some juicy overtime.

This for me too. Time spent on flight is working time. Timesheet get crazy when you start crossing too many timezones. Try flying 10 hrs to Europe, go straight to office there and work 10 hrs. HR sees you put in 20+ hrs in a day 🙂
 
On one job, I work hourly and they DON'T pay travel time. That is the most cappy thing I've seen a company do. The first time I travelled I travelled for 5 days. Monday and Friday were travel days (about 6 hours of travel time each day, not including preparation time / packing things at the office for the trip, so closer to 7 hours each day). So I was gone from home for essentially the full 40 hour work week + evenings and nights. I got paid for 24 hours of work. I'm pretty confident that is illegal, but I got nowhere with my boss or with HR. From then on, I told them I'm only travelling evenings. So I can work Monday and Friday and get paid for the full 5 days.

Technically, since I work two jobs each about half time, I also had to use 2 vacation days for that Monday and Friday off at my other job, while not being paid or being at home.

I do not do business travel but all of the people that do are salary. You will be lucky to find a salary person at my workplace that average more than 30-35 hours a week. Almost no one here works 40 hours and that includes any travel time people do.

I no longer have to travel for business, but when I did, they didn't compensate you for traveling on your own personal time. In general, all the employers I worked for would comp you with extra time off for business trips, but it was a reward for a job well done and not meant to compensate you for flying on your own time. The comp time was no where near the amount of OT you would put in on these trips, but it was still nice to have.
 

If you work 30 hours during the week and then travel for 10 hours do you get paid for those 10 hours, or do you need to accumulate 40 hours before you get extra money?

Just wondering how this non-exempt salary would work, since we do not have it where I work.
