I recently picked up a garment bag similar to this one.

I'm flying Delta tomorrow and their carry-on rules are here. Technically I'm exceeding the 45 liner inch requirements for carry-ons. Is Delta going to give me trouble trying to carry-on this type of bag. I have to take a suit and I rather not spend my evening ironing.

Are they really enforcing the 1 carry-on rule? I need to carry my bag and my laptop.

The rule is one carry-on plus one personal item. You'd be fine. The laptop counts as a personal item and would go under the seat in front of you.

Not sure about the garment bag. I only use a regular carry-on suitcase, since a garment bag needs to be lugged around. I either wear the suit (like sjwaste said) or just iron it in the hotel anyway. How many suits are you bringing? Ironing isn't that bad. It only takes about 10 minutes.

Edit: I'm trying to think back... I think I have seen garment bags brought on as carry on but not often. I'm not sure about Delta - I don't fly on them often. In my experience I've seen AA be pretty strict. Others not so much. But that all depends on how crotchety of gate agent you get, so ymmv. Worst case they'll check it at the gate. If you're worried about it, wear a suit so you're not SOL if they gate check it and something happens to it.

If you tried to put that bag in the overhead on a plane I was on I would cock punch you as you go down the aisle. That's not a carry on bag. If you get through security with it, they will most likely gate check it.

Some carriers have coat closets in their planes still. I do not know if Delta does. If they do, you could just bring your suit in a standard garment bag (the kind you use in your closet) and hang it up in the coat closest in the plane.

I actually use a standard rectangle roller carry on that has a folding garment bag that fits in it. That works for me, and the suit doesn't wrinkle if you fold it right. I recommend this kind if you don't want to wear it.

If you have a standard carry on roller bag, it is possible to fold the suit to fit in there without wrinkling as well if you are careful.

I'm wearing a suit and packing one. I thought about just bringing one suit but I'm traveling with my boss's boss (also the person that gives me my next promotion) so I want to dress to impress.

In addition to my laptop I've got to lug a projector too so I think I'm stuck with a traditional shaped carry-on with half the space for the projector and the rest for my clothes. Its only a 1 night trip but 2 days worth of meetings.

most planes have a closet you can hang garment bags in. just ask the lady to hang it on there when you walk into the plane.

If they charge you extra, so be it. Just be kind and ask if there are alternatives. Bring everything you need to be successful, but don't over do it.

I was at a store, and the dress shirt cost me forty bucks, which isn't terrible, but considerably more expensive than the average T-shirt. Guy was looking at me and said, "that was forty dollars?" I told him I'm buying my career.

Don't look nervous if you get charged extra. These days people don't sell all of themselves enough, and it could stop them from further promotions, but don't get wreckless either.

I fly Delta every week, and I can honestly say I've never seen anyone put anything that big in the overhead. The planes do have a coat closet, but they generally reserve that space for passengers flying First Class. If you happen to be flying first class, they will do everything in their power to help you get that bag on the plane, including putting it in the closet. If you're flying coach, you'll be better off avoiding the hassle and checking the bag.

Just my 2 cents.

Whee, just got back from my first business trip yesterday, flew Delta. Their rule is one carry-on and one personal item (briefcase). My carry-on was slightly too long for the overhead so I had to put it in the other way, but the flight wasn't full and it wasn't an issue. On the way back, the flight was full and since I got screwed with zone 4 I ended up having to gate check it. If you make it through security, you'll probably be fine.

On the other hand, just pack your suit in a regular freaking bag. Hang it up in the bathroom while you're in the shower and the steam will get the wrinkles out just fine. Garment bags are stupid. You can handle ironing one shirt.
