I've known about this for awhile, but I recently came across the Wiki encyclopedia entry and thought I'd post it.

It should be noted that there are some vagaries as to exactly what happened here, and who was really involved and to what extent, but it's still something to be wise about:

Interesting read, thanks for the link. I remember wondering why the railroad giants didn't overtake the government. They had more money than the entire country!
