No, there's a big difference between self-defence and vigilante. This was not self-defence. This was calculated and time was given to chase the alleged thieves and run them over. This only happens in third world nations without law enforcement prosecuting the case. And to some extent, that's understandable in those countries since the laws are ineffective. However, some people come here, as do a few born citizens, thinking they can take the law into their own hands. This isn't a third world nation. You have no rights to vigilante. His only defence now is dimished mental capacity or a jury willing to engage in nullification (perhaps I should hope that most AT members will not be members of the jury, since they are defending or praising his conduct).

It was calculated? Time was given? What the hell are you smoking?

The news report I read stated, "Investigators said after the suspects left with the store's money, the co-owner jumped into his Hummer and chased after the suspects." To me, that sounds like they robbed him, and he immidiately headed for his vehicle. That was no calculated. That was not planned. That was spur of the moment.

If MORE people were like him, there would be less crime. Period. Criminals who are not suffering from diminished mental capacity will be much less likely to commit a crime when there is a greater risk of personal harm. Period. The numerous drops in crime following broader CCW laws, and publicized tales of citizens fighting back, are proof time and time again that the best way to deter crime is to show there will be immidiate consequences.

Thats Phoenix for you, I love it

Phoenix=extremely high crime

so far from watching the news once a week or so, the highest number of officer involved shootings in a single day is 3

Holy crap. I choked on my cigarette. You funn4y bastard!

Wow. I just hope that he got the right ones, that it ended very quickly, and that he didn't endanger anyone else doing it.

It sounds like no one else was hurt. If the suspects are found guilty, they should serve their sentences and they shouldn't be allowed to sue for anything much more than unpaid medical bills.

I don't think the driver of the Hummer should be allowed to walk away from this though. He should be charged with reckless driving, lose his license for a good long while, and his insurance company should consider him a huge risk.

If you have an ounce of Testosterone in your body, you would have done the same thing.
I am serious.
Almost any man would have done that, and almost no woman would have.
The difference is simply testosterone levels.

As much as I like you, Luvly, people like you are the reason this country's legal system has become broken.

Too feel-good. Too "understanding." Too wimpy.

Oh I am sure he will be punished more than them. That's the stupidity of our justice system.

True.

Unfortunately, yes.

Some State Prosecutor will jump on this like a Vampire in a Blood Bank. :disgust:

Personally, I feel:

If there were witnesses/video tape that can verify that "those exact guys" robbed him; this dude should be given a key to the city and star in the next Hummer commercial.

He's my personal Jesus for the next week. 😎

Think about it: Crushing the bad guys to death...with a multi-ton truck. Does it get any sweeter than that? I think not!

Our justice system is broke. I long for the days of frontier justice. I was born 150 years too late.

this guy's awesome!

now, why didnt he put it in reverse and roll back over it?

i see very little wrong with vigilanteism...

as long as you're got the right guy, then i feel it's justified 🙂

I hope he loses his Hummer and his business during his stint in jail/prison for reckless driving, assault with a vehicle, attempted manslaughter . . . throw the book at him. Hopefully, the robbers will recover from their injuries and enjoy 5-10 in prison for armed robbery.
If you want to live in anarchy go to Kashmir or Columbia, civil societies enforce all of their laws all of the time.

*BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!*

Wrong answer.

Civilized society fails when three punkasses can walk into YOUR store, rob YOU of YOUR hard earned money, get away, then stick their middle finger in your face in court, get probation b/c they have no records and then DO IT AGAIN TO YOU, AGAIN next week.

Happens every day.

We still live in the greatest country in the world, but we need to DE-evolve a bit. If I was rich, I'd pay for his defense fund.

One more term for Bush, then two for his REPUB successor, and we''ll be back where we need to be.

What the hell does Bush have to do with some guy running over people? I hope you realize that 6 more years like the last two will put my country in the toilet . . . you might even consider going back to Canada.

Actually it's not. The typical woman has significant serum testosterone levels . . . and the typical man has significant estrogen. In fact, the higher your testosterone level the higher your estrogen level will be as well.

LOL! thats great. i hope those criminals deserve what they get. i think the dude in the hummer shouldnt be punished too much. maybe a warning or two not to fool around. but this time around, his action towards the criminals were justified. definately.

We need more people like this guy and the shopkeeper who blew away two robbers with a SPAS-12. 😀

So let me guess, if he pulled out a .45 and shot all three in the back as they fled with his cash . . . you think that's the way it should be? Lose the hyperbole b/c it distorts reality. Indeed there are plenty of criminals roaming the streets, many are habitual, and cycle through the criminal justice system. Doesn't it make sense to fix the criminal justice system instead of having bullets and 3-ton SUVs careening through your neighborhood?

We do not live in the greatest country in the world. We live a very good country with great potential. If you believe this guy represents the best America has to offer you should contribute to his defense fund regardless of how much money you have.

my only gripe: he missed the other two fvckers.

you do armed robbery, you deserve what you get...i don't even want the court system to lock them up, that's major burden on my tax dollars to give them shelter, three daily meals, tv, and a gym!

hope the driver gets community service.

The only downfall to this story is that the robbers didn't die. Harsh? Deal with it. All you pacifists out there can bite me. All of you saying, what if this business owner endangered someone doing this little stunt, well ask yourself did the robbers endanger this guy?

KK

Yes. I also would have bought him a big box of .45s and a thank-you card.

Bernhard Goetz - the 'Subway Vigilante'

I doubt 1/5 of the people posting on this forum live particularly risk-filled lives. The insecurity that leads to gun and Hummer ownership likely comes from the TV news not the reality of your daily life. The passion which filled the Hummer guy is certainly understandable but only incidental circumstance keeps him from being throttled. Do you think his rage clouded his judgement? Do you think he would run a red light to pursue his prey? What if the streets were more crowded with traffic and crosswalks with pedestrians? What is one of the thugs had a child in the car (daycare is expensive)? We have laws to prevent the "what ifs" from becoming "that should have never happened".

Armed robbery is quite serious and relatively uncommon. The vast majority of Americans will NEVER have a firearm pointed at them so why contend the solution to an infrequent event is carte blanche for vigilantes? We are a nation of laws b/c we are civilized . . . there's nothing civilizing about Hummer Man's behavior. It is indeed de-evolved as MichaelD implied.

Great logic.

"You don't have a 100% chance of encountering a situation where you would need to protect yourself, so why plan for it?"

You suck at life.

We have laws to prevent the "what ifs" from becoming "that should have never happened".

If the laws were 100% effective than the "What if 3 punks try to rob me?" would never become "That should have never happened." And the "What if some dude goes on a rampage in a hummer" would be even farther away.

And as for:
civil societies enforce all of their laws all of the time.
You make the side-commentary that even in America we don't enforce all of the laws all of the time. Either we're not a civil society, or your logic is a bit off.

As dangerous as vigilante justice is, when push comes to shove, I would have wanted to do the same thing. I dont know if I'd have it in me to roll over their car in a hummer, but there is a simple fact that all of you seem to be forgetting. This was an armed robbery. That means they were still armed when he ran up to them, so its not like he's going to get out of his car and have a chat with them.

Those guys went into his store and put a gun to his face. I dont care whether its 5 minutes or 5 years, the next time he saw those guys he has ever right to shove a carbine down their throat as well. I respect human life and all, but to me there is a certain line when it comes to crime. When you cross that line, you should be erased from existence. Armed robbery is well over that line. As far as I'm concerned, every armed robber's life is forfeit. That is the choice they made when they decided to stick guns in peoples faces, and they are all well aware of it. I dont care who are you, or how tragic your life story is, once you cross that line, I dont give a sh*t.

There is absolutely NO EXCUSE for armed robbery. NONE. Itd be nice if every criminal got their day in court, but reality strikes and it JUST DOESNT HAPPEN. You never hear the stats on things like this, but Id be surprised if they caught one out of ten. They got what they deserved. And like someone else said, my only regrets when hearing this story is that its too bad he didnt get the other two.

Well, now that I know you're unarmed, you might as well hand over the TV, the car keys, and the wife's jewelry. Hell, hand over the wife while you're at it. 😛 Sounds like the courageous part of you is a brown stain on some motel room's mattress.
