Why is it, with one goal left in life; to play video on the internet, that flash continue to suck so major, major, major donkey.. major, huge ..... holy moley i cant get that out without putting a week in the vacation-from-anandtech-swear-jar.

So, an uber simple video streaming plugin across browsers sporting .264++, so easy to use that all you have to do is install it. One could problary extend VLC to do it. Lobby google/youtube to pick it up aaaand:

PROFIT

.... and death of flash.

flash : lags, hogs, crashes .. wtf, adobe, hire a coder or something.
edit : constant security updates, reboots.
edit : mcafee av prechecked 'optional'.. I guess they looked at oracle and java and thought.. yes, good idea.

It's already done, but many sites haven't switched(Youtube has). Inertia is a powerful force, so it'll take awhile before everyone's onboard.

I hate feeling old, why am I not aware of this.. are we talking html5? (cause i find that lacking too, specially on youtube)

Youtube and Netflix both have html5 players now and they're both superior to their alternatives (flash/silverlight). I really don't know what other alternative you want since html5 is viewed as the replacement for flash content.

If you hate dealing with flash updates why don't you just use Chrome and not worry about it?

Because Flash was designed more for making games and animations than streaming videos. If you don't believe me, trying using Adobe Flash Professional (which is easy to use and fun, and has nothing to do with streaming videos). 😀

Blame Youtube. In 2006, Youtube decided to use the Flash plug-in exclusively to "stream" videos from it's website for the longest time, even though Youtube streaming runs like garbage compared to downloading them and running in a dedicated player or even downloading them and running them straight in your browser (not through Youtube). And the world followed along...

You say you want to kill Flash, but what you really want to do in my opinion is bring Flash back to life, by killing the part that never belonged there in the first place (streaming videos).

We need to stop with stupid plugins, all this stuff needs to be built in as an actual standard so that it just works in all browsers. As far as I know HTML5 can do this already, though I think there's still lot of weirdness because it still depends on certain codecs being installed on the machine and depending on the browser it works differently etc... they need to refine this more so it can be made more universal.
