Business idea...

OMG I accidently just deleted everything I typed, so here goes again...

Background: The college I go to has a bookstore that will buy and sell used and new books. Most people try to buy used cause its the same thing and they are only for a semester but quite a bit cheaper. The bookstore will sell someone a book for 80 dollars used, and turn around and buy the same book back from someone else for 20.

Basically what I want to do is the same thing, only undercut their prices. They are totally ripping people off. I was thinking of setting up a website where I can take requests for books people want to sell and buy, and then set up times where we can make the deal on campus. Maybe have block times were I can do quite a few deals at once. If you figure I will buy a book from someone for 35 while the bookstore would only buy it for 20 why not go with me right? And then I'll turn around and sell it for 65, instead of 80 like the bookstore, thus still making a 30 dollar profit per book (obviously these are theoretical numbers).

There are a few problems I have though.

1. No office location, I'd have to set up times to meet up with people. Obviously not as convenient as what the bookstore offers.
2. I'd need a business license Im assuming? How hard is it to get one of those, and learn the basics of running a business (I'd have to pay taxes right?).
3. Knowing which books won't be used on campus anymore. Usually the college knows 1-2 semesters ahead of time, so I'd have to be able to find out about the same time as them to ensure I don't get stuck with books that no one can use. How would I go about doing that? The way I understand it the bookstore is the only people who know, and they find out from the publisher. I doubt the bookstore would willingly give me that information if Im trying to undercut their prices.
4. Another convenience issue... I would only be able to accept cash. I'm not exactly sure how credit payments work, and don't have a machine that could do that. While at the same time checks seem a bit high risk. If someone rights me a bad check Im going to be out the money, and small claims court would be to much work, for little reward.

Im sure there are a few other problems I just skipped over for one reason or another. Any advice or ideas would be great. Im trying to figure out if this would all be worth it in the long run, or if its just another one of my stupid ideas?

In any case, any input whatsoever is much appreciated!

Don't even bother. The problems are many, the rewards are slight, and Amazon and EBay already exist for people who want to save money on books. Plus what about browsing? Some people like used books with lots of notes in them, others don't. You're not planning on holding any stock.

Let me reiterate--don't bother.

Most college towns have a bookstore that puts the puts the college bookstore's prices to shame. The problem is that it's often easier to get books at the student store than it is at the other location... because people are too lazy to go off campus and would rather pay 100 dollars extra for books. 😕

Aside from this, the college's bookstore can usually accept financial aid for payment of books, wheras off campus sites cannot.

It's actually often cheaper to find books at amazon, even after shipping, then putting them on ebay will almost make your money back.

My friend did that in fall quarter... paid 150 for all of his books... managed to sell them on ebay for 156. (Nice!)

Where are you going to come up with all of the money to buy the used books to begin with? You have to buy them first before you can sell them.

a lot of colleges already have a website or forum set up by someone (university related or not) to trade / buy / sell books, etc. maybe someone has already started up something similar?

Yeah a forum which eliminates a middle man (which is what you want to be) is much simpler for the parties involved. Sure they hate paying the college bookstores, but it's a simple convenience. Those that want to take the time to maximize their buying and selling wouldn't want to use a middle man to begin with.

Haven't seen anything. I figure I could advertise for it with flyers in certain classrooms (teachers that like me) and in the halls and stuff.

Like someone mentioned above though, I don't know if the risk is worth the reward. As for the funds to buy the initial books, I wouldn't have a stock of books so getting started would be the hardest part. I would pretty much be counting on the fact that I'd get enough traffic to have one person come in and say ok I'll sell you this book, while at the same time having another person wanting to buy it, thus turning around and selling the book right after I buy it.

Just don't end up like what happened around here. Someone had an idea like you did and started a college book store downtown. Now they charge as much as the bookstore on campus does. On top of all that you have to stand in line for ages only to find out they are out of half the books you need. The campus bookstore you can look on the shelves to see if the book is in without waiting in line and the lines are much shorter because they have more than one register.
This supposed money saving alternative bookstore is nothing but a fraud.

it actually is a good idea. at my school theres some guy called the book dude and he buys and sells books for general breadth classes (less change in books from quarter to quarter) and he does this all out of his car. after you purchase a book from his website, you go to a parking lot on school at a designated time and you'll see him there and you pick up your book and pay for it there. sounds kinda wierd but it works. i know he's gotten a lot of business, he passes out fliers outside the classes he has books for but i think he also has a couple people helping him ...
