Business ESXi server?

Only way I've gotten the Web Client on 5.5 and 6.0 Beta to reliably function on Linux (Ubuntu) was using Chrome.

Yeah, you have to use Chrome because of Adobe's deal with Google which gives them access to version of flash with a special API. Works fine on Mac in all browsers since Flash is supported there. I hope that VMware decides to go with a full HTML5+JS implementation in a future release.

And we have gone completely offtopic....

Even though it is a overkill, I do find it interesting that I can have a web client (even if slow) that I can access anywhere. Sucks that it is flash only for now.

Im looking more at hardware than software.

Also, Im going to use ESXi as Im used to it and it would be easier to setup.

My bad on that.

Regarding the web client, my reason for bringing up it's Chrome requirement is that I thought I recalled hearing Google was ending Linux support for Chrome.

We are really getting nowhere.

Quick search shows me for example DELL PowerEdge T110 being compatible with ESXi 5.5 U2 I mean the hardware compatibly search works great, of course, but at the end of the day I have no idea if the hardware is good, is faulty, etc...

I agree that with a single server vSphere is excessive. I mentioned it becasue it's the only way to get the web client, which is the official way to get agentless management of VMware hypervisors, which the OP was interested in.

Ah, that is a good point. Still seems excessive for a single host, but yeah, that is what you would have to do.

Me personally, I would just run ESXi and call it a day. Manage from the traditional client. IF the environment grows to multiple hosts, buy the 3 host kit license, and import your existing host into vCenter at that time.

No sense sinking money into costs that may wind up determining that a different solution is best.

What are you looking for exactly at this point?

The T110 is fine. It would be quieter than a rackmount, that's for sure.

I'm not sure what you mean about the hardware being faulty??

Yeah, are you getting some kind of error when you install VMWare ESXi on that system? I've installed both ESXi 5.1 and 5.5 on a T110, and it worked fine.

I want something a bit beefier for my new test rig, though, so I'm getting a used T410 instead.

Yup, it's on our HCL and we have one in the office here actually that we've put 5.5 on.

For one VMWare Esxi box, a vSphere server ain't gonna happen... unless you just like to spend money.

riahc3 likes to spend money, like the summer sbs 2003 to server 2012 environment fiasco, or the 2015 plans to go full linux environment. when riahc3 said the server 2012 environment was going great, he meant great on paper i guess. i do enjoy reading all the threads though. like watching a slow money train wreck in motion.

There's no point in coming into a thread just to make snide comments about the OP. This is your warning.
