And where was the Mayor supposed to bus all those people to. You posted the picture and criticized him....he didn't do it "because the busses didn't have bathrooms in them" you said.
They neede a safe place to go with 300,000+ people and the means to feed and water them for what?? Several weeks minimum??

100,000 people or more needed to be evacuated.
The post-flood Superdome evacuation started about midnight Wed. night (60 hours ago) and only 15,000-20,000 have been evac'd from there (5,000 remain)
Now, extrapolate that out to 100,000 people and they would have had to have started the evacuation sometime back around the middle of August.
Also, I've read posts on other boards (like nola and wwltv) of people in that area discussing this topic and, in some districts, the keys are locked in a safe and that most of the city employees were already ordered out.
The NOLA emergency plan doesn't include public transportation out of the city, only public transportation to temporary shelters which is exactly what they offered.
Also, remember, Mayor Nagin was requesting outside assistance to provide security for the process and received little or none. The city, itself, cannot provide security to escort and control 100,000, esp. when they just evacuated 80% of the city.

They are having trouble swallowing their partisan pride and admitting this is another blunder (to put it lightly) on part of the Adminstration.
It sounds like someone made some tough decioions and then didn't know how to followup. If the relief aid is prevented from entering New Orleans, then the transportation is needed to move the people out.
Water food and medicine taken into New Orleans would at least serve to attract the remaining residents to the distribution points and relieve some of their misery while awaiting transportation out.

It would be easier for them to do so if everyone stopped reffering to some other blunder. Iraq has almost nothing to do with this and it's people like Bbond and his raving lunacy that put them on the defensive.
I'm not partisan, I wouldn't care who was in charge, all I know is the response has NOT been adequate. The local authorities screwed up, there is no question of that. There is also no question that when they did screw up the feds didn't step in to fix it and that's a MAJOR fvck up. FEMA exists to handle these things and there response has been pathetic. As someone who works in the infastructure business I know that the engineering challenges in this situation are extremely difficult to resolve, but the humanitarian relief that has been provided makes me sick.
When it was apparent tuesday that the situation was out of control FEMA should have authorized the regular duty millitary (say the 101st) to get supplies and boots into the city. They should have declared marshal law and given a general who can get things done control of the situation.

I know I'm a little late, and it's probably been discussed already somewhere in this thread, but I was disgusted last night with Anderson Cooper's interview with MS Senator Trent Lott. Ol' Trent boy praised the govement response and thought everything was fine.

I'm still not sure what all the hub-bub is about. Bush already said that his administration's response was unacceptable and also said that the governors of Mississippi and LA were doing outstanding jobs (Yesterday at Mobile, AL). He's pretty much said it all in those two statements!

Yesterday in Mobile, he specificially said that the governors were doing an outstanding job.
After re-reading, you are correct. He didn't place any blame, that I could find, on the federal level.

so Bush is finally at the site of destruction. it took him a while
sure the Mayor of NO is happy with him now, so is the Governor of Louisiana, but that is just politics. they want to have their photo taken with the President.
its great to see Bush comforting those people down there. especially when he was comforting those sweet girls yesterday.
but he could have shown more leadership, he could have shown more urgency. sure this is not a terrorist attack, but it could have been when you looked on tv. it was wider than a terrorist attack and affected more people. homeland security should really look at what they're doing.
also, what seems kind of weird to me is how Europe is playing this race card. today on the BBC radio show, i heard them constantly talk about race, race and more race. they are trying to say that we treat our minorities really poorly and that we didn't do more since its a predominately black area.

Don't ask them - ask the Muslims in the slums in southern France, the Jews who can't even wear skullcaps anymore without fearing violence, or the ethnic Turks in Germany who suffer all sorts of discrimination.
Our racial and ethnic integration makes Europe look like an apartheid state in comparison.

sure, things are not perfect. but Europe should look at its own before pointing fingers at us.
