WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush will propose a nearly $470 million boost in NASA's budget for fiscal 2004, an administration official said on Sunday, promising investigators would look into whether past cutbacks played any part in the space shuttle Columbia disaster.

Well then he better cut back on one of his other 'proposals'. He is proposing more and more increases on top of a tax decrease some funky math going on in his head.

Bonus for failure.

actually all the proposals should come from a cut in other spending.

Yeah, I was just about to say... I mean, I watched the State of the Union speech.. some of it, at least.. being Canadian I didn't really have much need to sit through all of it... but he proposed a lot of new spending. 500 mil here, 250 mil here... yikes. How can he do it?

Did Bush propose any spending cuts to offset the taxcuts and spending increases?

Totally agreed. Maybe not all at once, but over the next few years for sure. It's going to be interesting to see the kinds of opportunity costs Bush is likely, unfortunately, going to have to go through after what he said in his State of the Union speech- much of what was talked about is what will keep the Democrats at bay and approving of his work.

They should just put the old shuttles on Ebay and get a cool $10 billion. Buyer arranges shipping.

I'm glad to hear it, but its ashame it took something this tragic for NASA to finally get more funding.

I agree as well. NASA is grossly underfunded.

500Mil isn't much. NASA currently has a $13Billion budget allocated by the Fed Govt. They used to have a $30Bil budget but with Challenger... various lost missions... and other mishaps Congress decided NASA was spending too much and getting too little in results.

They're still underfunded.

Why on earth would they buy a new Shuttle? The design is from the 70's. It's too expensive, too unsafe, too high maintainance, and too old.
It's time for a new design. Stick to cheaper, further, faster. Increasing NASA budget before the failures are examined and reforms implemented is just rewarding failure.

can u fly a shuttle around like an airplane? (like take off and land in that way?) that would be an awesome tourist attraction :)

What if the 500million is going towards new design?

Then they should go to Congress and ask for money for a new design. This is a no strings attached failure bonus.

500 million probably wouldn't be enough to design a new shuttle. Sure, you might be able to do some rough sketches, but to get anything reliable, you need to test ideas and effects at every point; 500 million wouldn't cover the design and the tests needed to help build the design.

Currently they plan to replace it by 2010. There was a x-30 or something that got shelved due to technical problems.
