I can see why he said he will veto it, but he won't, so it doesn't really matter. He is just trying to say "look, I'm not a complete fiscal wreck to this country!"

Congress is attempting to add pork to the bill that is completely unrelated to either Katrina or the War effort.

Items that can not stand on their own are being slipped in to a bill thatbecomes politically expedietn to pass.

Business as usaul for the original beltway bandits.
The veto threat, announced in a White House statement on the $106.5 billion emergency spending measure, was aimed at placating conservatives in Bush's Republican Party who are irate over extra items added that they deem as "special-interest" spending.
"The administration is seriously concerned with the overall funding level and the numerous unrequested items included in the Senate bill that are unrelated to the war or emergency hurricane relief needs," said a draft of the White House statement, which was to be sent to lawmakers.

Yeah, this is the same thing that got the stupid statement from Kerry "I voted for it before I voted against it."

Trying to appeal fiscally conservative. Has issued similar threats before and has NEVER followed through on any of them. All an act.

You know what to tell him he can do if he can't take a joke. Same thing applies, even if he can.

Yep. I'll be delighted if he shows he's actually grown a set and follows through. Of course that will further antagonize his increasingly wayward lackeys in Congress, who might grow sets of their owns and stop rubber-stamping Bush's every whim. So I think you're right, he won't follow through. Congress will make some token changes, Bush will claim victory, and we taxpayers will take it in the shorts ... again.

That happens with every bill that goes through Congress.

Google "federal earmarks"

I don't think Bush actually knows what the veto is, just that it makes a good threat.

Bush never met a spending bill (with some extra pork attached) he didn't like. Yeah Bush is a jerk all right - perhaps we could take him more seriously as a "fiscal conservative" (laughing my ass off as I type that), if he would actually follow through once in a while and you know, actually veto something?!

Wouldn't have anything to do with his good friends Thad Cochran & Trent Lott tacking on the bill to
move the recently rebuilt @ $ 300 Million to give more access to the land so that Casions can build there
(And them receiving campaign funds from Casinos, would it?)
