Ok. I asked this question before but this was before anything was made final with this tax relief program. Now that its official, I was reading some articles and it didn't say anything about being dependent or independent for singles...just paying taxes. It says under 75k and single you get 300 to 600. Is this 300 for dependents and 600 for independents?

First off its not Bush Tax Relief. It was proposed by the Democrats in Congress with Georgie jumping on the bandwagon.
Don't forget Georgie said the economy was doing great!!!
Second off its not Tax Relief. Its a loan you will have to pay back.

Since when do you have to pay back rebates?

If you make above $3000 and paid no taxes you get $300. If you make above $3000 and paid taxes you get $600.

It's more of a loan in the sense that scholarships or student grants are loans - the government agency giving the grant is betting on you doing well in college, and getting a high-paying job afterwards. That way you'll wind up paying back the grant in the form of taxes.

This "rebate" is putting the country into debt, in the (misguided) hope that it'll stimulate the economy enough to help Congress win re-election....or, I mean, stimulate the economy enough so that it'll be able to eventually pay off that extra debt.

Well, the 2001 tax "rebate" turned out to be an advance on a 2002 refund. People who got refunds in 2002 had their refund reduced by the amount of the "rebate" from the previous year, and people who owed taxes had their tax bill increased by the amount of the "rebate".

So at least in that case, it did have to be paid back.

MBrown, i believe that if you are claimed as a dependent on another income tax return that you are not eligible for this tax rebate. i could be wrong, but that's usually the way it goes.

and i also believe this rebate is not something that will have to be paid back.

I don't go in there much. In fact, I try to not hover over the link the nav. I'm afraid it might suck me in and I'll be attacked by people who can't listen to reason that fear compromise and crush souls.

Awesome, lets stimulate the economy by taking one giant cash advance on the national credit card and hand it out so people can buy more shit they don't need and can't afford... brilliant! I'm going to use every penny to buy guns purely out of spite for the liberal geeks who promoted this idiotic program, shame on Bush or anyone else calling themselves a conservative and promoting this sort of handout garbage.

It'll be interesting to read the fine print on this bill and how the household/individual "income" value is calculated and if they are using 2006 or 2007 income data as a basis.

The government borrowed the money(mostly from the Chinese) to give to you.
And loans need to be payed back. So you (unless you die before the bill comes due) will have to pay back the money the government loaned you. All the while, you will be paying interest on the loan since the government is paying interest to the countries it borrowed from.

Ok, so you must not have read the last few posts we made about how idiotic you crazy "I hate bla bla bla!" people are. Who left the P&N door open? The stupids are escaping.

So at least in that case, it did have to be paid back.

Why is this check coming?
The tax bill the president is signing immediately creates a bottom income tax bracket of 10 percent, effective retroactively to the beginning of this year. That means the first $6,000 of a single's income or the first $12,000 of a couple's income is suddenly going to be taxed at 10 percent (instead of the old 15 percent rate). Because this change is retroactive, the government will owe everybody who already paid some of those taxes (through withholdings from their paychecks from January until now) some money back. The Treasury Department points out that this is not officially a "rebate" ... it's an "advance payment" to taxpayers of money they would have gotten back from the government as a rebate when they filed their tax returns next April (for 2001).

Link

It was a reduction in tax rate, with an immediate payment given (so yes in essence it did reduce what would have been your refund, but the refund was only coming because the tax rate was reduced)..you are only telling half of the story.

Either way it is a damn bad idea. Those "rebates" are not going to go for good that will save/jump start/give a hand job/insert your favorite word here the economy. It will go to upgrade Billy Jo Bobby Don Jack's cable service and crates of Twinkies.

If the Congress and Chimp in Chief want to help the economy...THEN CUT THE GOD DAMNED BUDGET!!! I'm not talking about just the "OMG BUSH's WAR! BUSH'S WAR!!" complaining about the budget either. I'm talking A to Z. Trim that puppy down like Valerie Bertinelli on Jenny Craig.

Until the government stops spending like a drunk crack whore watching QVC we as a nation are screwed. Of course we probably deserve it since the majority of the population seems to know more about the latest group of American Idol contestants than they do about the people running for President.

This is nothing but political grandstanding and vote purchasing in an election year.

What we have now is $192 billion dollar cash advance. The interest rate is high, and China will be the benefactor.

The checks are an advance on next year's refunds, and most, if not all of the money, will be deducted from taxpayers' refunds in 12 months' time.
LOL, fuck that. I thought it was insane when I thought it was a rebate, as advance it's really insane. Just imagine how many people will end up owing on 2008 income instead of getting a refund. Of course like everything Bush and this Congress does it'll be a Cluster Fuck.

Is that really what it is? Thanks but no thanks.

Some others in here are trying to pin this on "libtards" but most economists(many conservatives in that group) are pushing for this as well, even though it won't do a damn thing.

Well if some *sshat titles a thread "Bush Tax relief." should I just say he's an idiot because there is no such thing? Or should I ask if he lied in the thread title because he didn't understand or did he just hear from Rush that he should lie about what it is?
If you want a question answered your question should be about something real, not something made up.

I would assume that single, childless = non-dependent, unless your parents are declaring you as a dependent, in which case your parents should(?) get the extra rebate for having a dependent.

MBrown, to answer your question, it is basically $600 for every man and every woman and $300 for every child/dependent. Yes, there are exceptions, if you earn too much or too little money for example. But, those numbers apply to most everyone.

If you are a dependent, then your parents get $300 for you as long as they meet the income requirements.

Plain and simple.
