Even after a recount, and Bush comes ahead by a few hundred votes, and the Gore camp believes and has proof that there was some ballot mistakes for several 1000 voters...

A judge will decide the next president

It's basically a label that describes the process of law enforcement agencies targeting people based on a set of criteria. For instance a wealthy black man in an airport has a higher likelihood of being a drug dealer than an poor looking white guy. It's been done forever, and in recent years has been given a name.

Kid, do you know the difference between a declarative and interrogatory statement? The title of this thread and your responses suggest you do not. It is taught in the fourth grade where my daughter goes to school.

debate transcript
Yeah, I can't imagine what it would be like to be singled out because of race and stopped and harassed. That's just flat wrong, and that's not what America is all about. And so we ought to do everything we can to end racial profiling. One of my concerns, though, is I don't want to federalize the local police forces. I want to -- obviously in the egregious cases we need to enforce civil rights law, but we need to make sure that internal affairs decisions at the local level do their job and be given a chance to do their job. I believe in local control of governments, and obviously if they don't there needs to be a consequence at the federal level. But it's very important that we not overstep our bounds and I think most people -- most police officers are good, dedicated, honorable citizens who are doing their job, putting their lives at risk who aren't bigoted or aren't prejudiced. I don't think they ought to be held guilty. But I do think we need to find out where racial profiling occurs and do something about it and say to the local folks, get it done. And if you can't, there will be a federal consequence. "

Police "profile" all the time. If you drive an older, beat-up car, you are much more likely to be pulled over late at night for something simple like a broken tag light, in the hopes that you will have an outstanding warrant and will start running. I guess that means cops discriminate against old cars. EVERY cop does it, EVERY time they are out. If we stop using history as a determinant for catching criminals, we'll see crime skyrocket. Race is just one piece of the puzzle, and it's not done out of racism.

Talk to a cop and ask them how they find criminals. Hell, the FBI has people called PROFILERS who develop composites of possible perps. Do we get rid of that, too?

amen.. they have people PROFILE a Serial killer. So I guess if we start spewing this no racial profiling, they can't specify race in their synopsis, can they? Egads, if PEOPLE ARE BREAKING THE LAW THEY DESERVE TO BE PUNISHED.

When I was 16, I drove an old Monte Carlo with rims, tinted windows, 350 V8 and glass packs, and YES I had cops do a friggin uturn to run my plates on several occasions. Amazingly, after ditching the car, I haven't gotten a speeding ticket. I was aware of the fact that YES, my vehicle did by nature look suspicious, and that I WAS breaking the law. I never tried to sue screaming profiling blah blah blah. Egads people, learn to take some responsibility. Now yes, if people are 100% compliant with the law and are being pulled over several times a year, then yes there is a problem with that police force that needs to be addressed. But don't get pissed if they are actually accurate in identifying criminals.

A few months ago, I was pulled over and issued a ticket for making a right turn on red. Thank you Officer Neff (no, I'm not kidding.) So, I was in front of a fairly large shopping center, as I wanted to slide in to Best Buy and pick up a rebate form. Time is roughly 7:30PM on a spring/summer Friday evening.

After I signed the ticket, Officer Nef (who had already called for backup, a second officer now one the scene ... both officer were white, I'm Black, remember, with a goatee and mustache, no less) asked if he could search my car. Knowing that had nothing of interest, I agreed. The next thing I know, he was searching me! I was like "WTF!" No prompting or anything. He said absolutely NOTHING about search my person. Thankfully, I was so dumbfounded that I didn't react in a way that could have gotten me killed.

So, after an extensive search by the Nefstah (all I seem to remember is developing a sever case of dry mouth and Neffy surprised that I had a golf bag and clubs in my trunk), nothing was found. After being told that there is heavy narcotic traffic in the area (supposedly justifying the search), I went on my way.

I never pursued the issue any further, paying th ticket by mail. But, it wasn't the fact that I just so happened to be Black and got pulled over that leaves me with a bitter taste. It's the search of my person WITHOUT asking/notifying that gets me.

I'm not really sure if racial profiling fits this case (a factor as to why I didn't look in to things further), but it was one hell of a reality check.

SU: You should have contacted a lawyer. Your civil rights were violated if they went thru all that over a minor traffic violation. They have to have probable cause to search a person and their property. Being black is not probable cause. Makes me sick in this day and age that neaderthal cops like that still roam free. I would have taken them to the wood shed.

Ditto what rickn said. The individual officer should be punished, period.

But, that is not the same as creating a system that makes it impossible for law enforcement to effectively operate.

SU, in my youth I would have asked him to make deal with me. I wont object to the search, if you agree that if there is nothing in the car, I dont get the ticket.

I got hassled alot as kid by the cops, I'm half-asian, and I never considered it as a race thing. I had a hot rod, and that was excuse enough for the cops. They hassled all my friends equally, white, black and indian if they had hot rods. It was not uncommon to have them wait by my car in the Roy Rogers parking lot to "inspect" my car for safety as soon as I came out.
From my first comment you probably figured I also hassled by the cops for being a smart a**.

Now that I live in a more rural area, I do notice that when a black or hispanic male is pulled over , there is always aat least cruisers at the scene. I dont recall seing that happen with white males in our town. DWB/H may be a real thing here. But they dont seem to target asians at all for some reason.

When I first got my 67 Galaxie I drove it for about a week with out of state dealer tags on it and on my way to the dmv to get new tags :) I got pulled over and searched for drugs. He didn't call for back up but he did pat me down and go through my car. Luckly the old lady that had owned it before me didn't do drugs, well atleast not illegal drugs, so he didn't find anything and I was sent on my way. Whats bad is my parents kept telling me to hurry up and get new tags before this very thing happend. Thats one of the things cops look for so I understood why he did it so I didn't get pissed and after he was done he complimented me on my car so I couldn't get too mad. Thats been the only time in 6 years I have been pulled over.

BTW I am a skinny white guy.

My brother in highschool had a red LX Mustang and every time he was out at night and drove through town the cops would stop him and search his car ... just because it was a red mustang ... (he's white) when my parents found out about this they were enraged they told him next time that it happened to tell the cops sure you can sure it .. as soon as you call my parents so they can be here to watch. After he started using that .. they stopped searching his car.
