Bush Sr.: Quit Making Claims Against My Son

linky

President George W. Bush's father said it's "a total lie" to say he used his influence to keep his son out of the Vietnam War.

Bush served stateside in the Texas Air National Guard during the war, while Democratic rival John Kerry commanded a Swift boat and was wounded three times.

In an interview on CBS's "The Early Show," the president's father dismissed claims that he helped his son stay out of the war. Former President George H.W. Bush said there is no evidence, yet people "keep saying that."

Ya, he got in based on his 25/100 guard test score (lowest possible pass) and jumped ahead of 500 others based on his smile.

Sure, and are you going to tell me next that GW Bush and Jenna Bush represent the best of Ivy league university students?

WRONG. You are waaay out of line. 😉 He jumped ahead of 100,000 people, not 500, and it wasn't his smile, it was the fact that his daddy was loaded and powerful.

To think a future president of the united states would use his influence to get his son out of combat duty in a war he supported! Oh my.

Some people were on the waiting list for 1 1/2 years. I guess he was just "lucky" to get in with such a "high" score. NOT!!

arsbanned, you're forgetting he's a Republican (TM) and that makes him a truth-sayer in the eyes of ckg and red-state fanatics everywhere.

Sounds like Bush sr's getting his panties in a bunch. 🙂

Notice he says "I didn't use my influence to keep my son out of the Vietnam War."

But, he doesn't say "I didn't use my influence to get my son in the National Guard."

In reality it was the same thing.

Can't fault a Daddy for trying.

Summary of this thread: Iran-Contra liar sacrifices another young man's life so his son can get into the Champagne unit and gets outraged when someone calls him on it.

Is there a Republican that ISN'T a liar in your eyes?

Ken R. He's just an average guy I went to school with. You wouldn't know him. I never heard him tell a lie. Sometimes I find your posts really boring Crimson....

Yes George H. had a lot of pull back then, Nobody heard of him but he stoped W's hole unit from being called to nam after most put in for combat

The Dub had a Hole Unit?

BTW, what good is it to have influence if you can't use it? I bet a lot of those who had to go to Nam wouldn't have minded if somebody had pulled some strings to get them out of it. That war was complete BS, I have no problem with anybody getting out of going there. I sure didn't want to go!

Man Says He OK'd Bush for Guard

But Ben Barnes, who later was lieutenant governor, said the request for his help came from a Bush family friend ? not Bush or his father, who then was a congressman.

"Neither Congressman Bush nor any other member of the Bush family asked Barnes' help. Barnes has no knowledge that Governor Bush or President Bush knew of Barnes' recommendation," the statement said

Barnes said:

"I got a young man named George W. Bush into the National Guard when I was lieutenant governor of Texas, and I'm not necessarily proud of that, but I did it," Barnes said in the 45-second video, which was recorded May 27 before a group of John Kerry supporters in Austin. Barnes, who was House speaker when Bush entered the Guard, later became lieutenant governor.

When Barnes was Lt. Governor from 1969-1973Lieutenant Governors of Texas, Bush was already in the Guard
