President calls for more choices for consumer, but doesn't say how">http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4609864/</a>

is he trying to tap in for the geeks' votes?

I am thinking Kerry will response by saying "HDTV for everyone in 2008"

The Govt already has HDTV policy set, its broadcast companies that refuse to play along "because its to expensive".

Uh, most americans can't get broadband. While its affordable for those that can get it, telecos are dragging their feet on rolling out services to lesser populated areas. Some places are resorting to co-op WiFi to get broadband.

I remember we were somehow all supposed to have HDTV sometime or another. I'm not even sure if that deadline has passed yet.

While both are becoming more mainsteam, and more people are getting into it, I don't see that or this happening within the next couple of years.

While overly broad pronouncements like that tend to give me a good vibe, I most certainly do not think President Bush is the guy to lead the way on this.

I wish I had any type of broadband in my area. They cap sattelite at 150 megs at a time so it doesnt even interest me, That and the pings suck.

Broadband is stil too expensive !!! Man, its only internet !

Comcast wants 42,xx + cable modem rental + tax + whatever fee which i guess comes close to $50 a month if you ARE a comcast cable customer already.
For non comcast customers its about $65... a MONTH
(Yes, i know they have promos, but i am talking about their normal prices after the promo period.)

SBC too want a fortune and a stupid contract for their very fast SBC DSL ....etc...etc...

And yes, for me $50/month or more just for the internet is quite a bit of money....its a difference whether you pay $9,99 for some dial-up or over $50..'affordable' is relative.

And..btw. i dont want to know what comcast would charge if they wouldnt have competition w/ SBC...

If he can get SBC speeds over the whole country, I'll be happy. I'm still voting for droopy-face though.

Is Bush becoming a socialist now? I thaught in America it is the market who decides: who gets what at what price. I guess if u ppl in far out areas would foot the bill for getting connected to broadband the telco companies would be more than happy to do so ;)

If only he were a bit more ambitious and mandated something to the tune of "fiber to the curb for all Americans that they've already paid telcos billions for since the early 90's."

Just like the rural electric cooperative movement in the early 1900's. The electric companies weren't willing to run line out so far then, so cooperatives had to be formed. Back home we get our electricity from a cooperative. I could see this; rural broadband cooperatives owned and run by the customers they serve. :)

Eventually everyone will have 10 Megabit upstream and downstream for $10/month...just a matter of time.

I think that's becoming the reality in Sweden at least.

If everybody gets broadband it won't be because of him. And I'm still not voting for him.

Just like the internet wasn't because of Gore.

You're the freaking asshat.

1. HS Internet is NOT available in all areas. DSL has limited range and telco companies just aren't doing enough. I've been waiting for over 4 years for DSL to come into my area. They are JUST NOW offering it in April. They've been telling me for years, "it's coming soon".

2. HS Internet in my area is 49.99 and 57.99. There are plenty of people who cannot afford this "luxury". Sure it doesn't sound like much to us, but there are people who just can't afford it. Oddly enough it used to be 29.99 for my cable, but has jumped to $57.xx because Comcast purchased Intermedia cable and raised the prices. Now they're also going to not give you a credit for owning you?re own modem, they want to up the price $5 and not give credits, trying to force you to buy modems from them because it essentially becomes pointless to buy you're own.

Sorry bud, but you're a schmuck.
